Hello

This is somewhat of a long read so bare with me here

I've been having problems with my 2009 cbr600rr dying while riding. It had around ~4500 miles when it first happened and ~5100 miles the second time (yesterday) The bike is completely stock.

First problem I had was that the tachometer stopped working once but the bike was completely normal. I got home turned the bike off and on and the tach went back to normal.

Fast forward ~2 weeks.

I was riding going about 60-70mph, RPMs at 6-6.5 and the bike completely lost power while I was shifting down from 6th to 5th, while the clutch was held in. I thought I accidentally pressed the engine killswitch button. I coasted and shifted down to N, turned it back on and rode not even half a mile when it died again. I looked at the killswitch and it was at the on position so it couldn't be that.

The kickstand wasn't bent and looked normal.

I waited for 30 mins and rode back home. I rode at 50-60mph and kept the RPMs less than 5k for about 10 miles. Then rode 14 miles more at around 40 mph. Didn't have any problems on the way back.

After that I took the bike to a local honda dealership, they said they hooked it up to a computer and no error codes were in the memory. When they test rode the bike the mechanic said it died on him twice. Same conditions I had. A week later i get a call from the dealership saying they couldn't find out what's wrong with the bike. The dealership said it might be just bad gasoline even though I told him I always fill up with the highest octane rating available. Nevertheless I put some seafoam and fresh tank of gas. I rode it ~120 miles until it ran out but the bike didn't die.

Since then I rode it ~600 miles and pushed it hard in all gears but it never died again.

Fast forward to yesterday.

The bike turned off on me again. I was going about 85mph and held the clutch in so I can move my right hand and get some air. The rpm's went down to 1.5 (normal idle rpm) but then the bike turned off. I Coasted, stopped, shifted to N and turned it back on. It fired right up. So I shifted to 1st and while holding the clutch in, I revved it to red line and it died again.

Tried it again but it didn't turn off. Rode home 20-30 miles going ~80mph and it was fine.

Today I rode again and tried to replicate what happened but I couldn't.

Some notes:
  • No loose connections on battery. I checked the voltage and it was between 12-13 (The voltmeter I used didn't have decimals)
  • Only oil light came on when the bike died in all 4 times.
  • The bike didn't sputter, just suddenly lost power.
  • Lights stayed on when it died.
  • All fuses working.
  • As of now the bike has 5280 miles on it.
Alright, that's it. I think that's everything.

So what is wrong with my bike?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Strange that the dealer couldn't sort it out..

There is a member on here "Nico" that might be of some assistance, he's pretty knowledgeable with these things..

I honestly don't believe them, but I generally distrust dealerships so I may be biased haha. The mechanic couldn't turn it on because he didn't know which position means the killswitch is on...

I PM'd him, thanks for your help!

Bad Kill Switch

These switches have a slight wear problem which you may notice in the contacts if disassembled.

At the point of it failing completely, you may need to wiggle it just right in order to get your bike to start.

You could replace the switch, guessing around $35. Worth it to simply put a new one on, or you may take apart the old one to inspect, modify with dilectric grease to the sliding contacts, or otherwise shimming to eliminate a visible bad contact.

A new switch assembly is best.

Clean your kill switch, clean and reseat your ECU plugs, clean and inspect the ground line from the BAS and clean and reseat the front harness connectors.

Thats a real head scratcher...the fact that it only sometimes cuts out when you hold the clutch in kinda suggests the rpm's are dipping below the idle range 800-1200rpm momentarily and the bike cuts out. Why does it not happen all the time, and whats causing it to happen ??? :retard:

I would undo and reconnect every electrical connector, look under the tank and around the airbox for any pinched hoses...

My BMW f800s did this, and it was due to some pinched hoses that run to an idle actuator...its very dangerous because if the bike cuts out around a corner the rear tyre will lock up!

Thinking out the box, if your regulator was not operating properly your voltage could dip too low causing the bike to shut down...like i said 'out the box' ;)

Switches

Sounds like one of the safety interlocks may be shorting out here and their causing the ignition to cut off; Side stand, clutch, and killswitch would be where i start checking for loose wire in conectors or maybe even a frayed wire, then volts and resistance

I will either try out what you guys suggested or take it to a different mechanic and have them check whats been said. Since im not the most mechanically inclined...

Thanks!

Sik9 I had similar events....I think.

Do you use the kill switch to stop the motor or ignition key?

I opened up kill switch and it was clean contacts, packed it with dielectric

grease and did/do not use kill switch at all.......

have not had repeat of problems....

do you have a Power Commander 5?

I don't have a power commander.

I use the kill switch to turn the engine off

The thing is that it happens at random times so if I stop using the kill switch then I wouldn't know if it's because of it or not. But I will try. Thanks!
