riding options around Gauteng (twisties)

hi all

Are there any good twisties or scenic routes around gauteng, where ill be able to practice cornering techniques?

im thinking less than 200km to get there (startign form the east rand) else ill be dead tired before the fun starts. the harties roads are always clogged with traffic so no having fun in those twisties.

im not looking to go fast, just to have fun but it seems gauteng is filled with straigth roads.

The only roads that do look appealing from a google maps point of view are those in Suikerbos rand nature reserve so thats a no-go.

Theres got to be something out there somewhere. currently the only twisties i know off are on the service road (jones rd) approaching or thambo and thats like 3 nice longish corners which you are able to do at like 40 to 60 km/h, yet also mostly traffic infested and they are pretty blind so high risk.

any ideas?

Hi there CLX,

I live in Nelspruit. I regularly head out towards Sabie, Graskop, Origstad, Blyde River Canyon, etc.

Depending on the mood (the weather is not really a problem here, winter is non existent!) I head out for a morning, day, weekend or loooong weekend.

Let me know when you are in these parts again!

Things to remember when heading this way....

Watch out for trucks, overloaded taxis, bakkies!!!!!
The N4 is the only route for the people that travel to and from Mozambique.

Toll fees:
N4 - Middelburg = R 45 - 00
N4 - Machadodorp = R 67 - 00

Not sure where in JHB you from, but if you fill up your bike somewhere in the east rand or Pretoria, you should make N4 Alzu Petroport easily.

http://www.alzupetroport.co.za/

While there, you could also check out the rhinos and other wildlife while taking a leak!

When you topped up your bike there (Alzu is half way between JHB and Nelspruit) you should make Nelspruit and surroundings easily.

When you go through the Toll/Plaza at Machadodorp, you will see a split in the N4.
The R36/R539 goes left and the N4 goes right.

Take the R36/R539. It meets up with the N4 25KM before you get Nelspruit.
Its a new road, much better and no trucks ect.
Also full of twisties!!!

Once the R36/R539 meets up with the N4, watch your speed! Not only will the trucks, taxis and overloaded bakkies be back again, but a lot of police, traffic officers and then the RED BERETS......Now these are traffic cops on steriods.

They have more power than the normal police and traffic cops.....

Watch out for the cross where N4 meets the R36/R539.
Watch past first bridge.
Watch out for them again when you get to Alkmaar.
Watch out for them when you go past the MBombela stadium and Halls.

They are all over the N4 around here due to the traffic moving in and out of Mozambique. Drugs, firearms, wanted people, and and and.

If you want more info, just let me know!

yes there are a number of options:
  • Harties. multiple routes, lots of bikes, be careful though, road can surprise a new rider (ask my wife she still carry the scars. ask me my bike still carries the scars)
  • Head out towards magaliesburg and go north to harties and back into the city. couple of roads but dont ride them alone.
  • Head south towards Parys. first stretch will be boring but some nice twisties beteen parys and potchefstroom. road condition may be questionable though.
  • for a real fun time book a motorcycle riding course at the gerotec facility outside harties, but that costs R2K

Great thanks, def let me know when you're heading down there. I'm getting together some local riders too so we get a smallish group together.
