Media Servers?

not a video game but PS3 related so i figured this would be the place to ask.

just picked up my first PS3 yesterday. best buy is selling the old fatty 80GB ones for 279 now that the slims are out for 299. pretty good deal i thought. i am planning on upgrading to a min 250GB HD anyway and as cheap as they are i may go bigger. also a side question. has anybody put in a 7200rpm HD? how is it working for you?

but the main question is what program are you guys using for media sharing between the ps3 and your computers? i have wireless hooked up and going. what do i need to be able to play saved music and videos etc from my desktop on my tv/stereo via the ps3?

The best hands down. You can use mediaplayer 11 if you like wmp but you wont find software that will stream near as much different stuff as tversity. Make sure your firmware is 1.8 on the ps3. download it

Bwahhahahaha.
New slims can be had for $275 shipped so I think you got screwed on the pricing.

As far as sharing media...there's many different ways.

well i wanted the instant gratification and didnt want to wait for shipping.

as for the slims, i dont need the extra 5 cubic inches of space that the slim will save. i was told (allbeit by a sales person) that the blue ray player is of a slightly better quality on the fat version, something about a laser or diode or probably some bullshit. either way i dont care, i got a new old ps3 and 18 months no interest financing so im happy.

beyond that, do you care to share any of what you deem the best/maybe easiest way of sharing media?

I use Azureus, it has a pretty nice "drag'n'drop" setup for movies that I have stored on my computer (I haven't tried it with music, but assume it works the same)

I haven't heard anything yet about hardware reliability / performance other than the slim loads things slightly faster. I do know that the slim can output HD audio over bistream while the fat can only do it over losless? Whatever the other option is, something starting with L. Also the slim can no longer install Linux, that's about it really.

If you have a network attached storage drive hooked up to your router the PS3 should detect it, you can just drop stuff on that from your PC and access it that way. The PS3 doesn't like folders though, sometimes it won't find stuff just because it's in a folder. I haven't really messed with the media server stuff much.

As far as hard drives go, there seems to be little performance gain by going up to 7400 RPM, so just go with whatever you can find or is cheaper. Stick to one of the more trustworthy brands though like Seagate or Western Digital (stock hd is Seagate 5400.3).

I use this prog. It seems to do better for me if i'm watching .mkv's. None of the programs will do HD properly. I've used "mkv to ps3" to convert my HD files and put them on an external, this has been successful to a certain extent. What i have found though is that if i have a file that won't play smoothly on my ps3 over tversity or the other "ps3 server" program, is that if i'll fire up my xbox it will work find over it. Doesn't make sense. Ither way, i think for xmas i'm going to get an Asus O!play and a terabyte external to run it supposedly pulls mkv quite will and has an HDMI output. I quit downloading HIdef movies b/c i had to convert them before i could play them on my tv.

A media server is a computer appliance, ranging from an enterprise class machine providing video on demand, to, more commonly, a small home computer, or NAS (Network Attached Storage), dedicated for storing various digital media.Media server is a device that simply stores and shares media. The only requirement for a media server is a method of storing media and a network connection with enough bandwidth to allow access to that media.
