Raise minimum wage..... What do you think?

Didn't hear anything on here about it. What's your take on this? Is raising minimum wage going to change anything?

The thought of it sounds great, but i think it will jus boost economic inflation.

It's going to change the digits on my paycheck, which would be lovely.

Have you heard the term "Living wage"

Kind of falls in the same sentence.

Raising min wage is not going to help the "poor" as much as they think. They're going to have to pay more for just about everything.

Do you know who's going to be really happy? Union members whose wage is based off of the min wage.

Personally, I don't like min wage laws. Wage is a deal between an employer and an employee. What ever both sides will accept is fair for me. I know I am a little extreme on this.

Teenagers will love it but in fact will hurt the economy. Stupid idea IMO. Using McDonald's as an example they will hire less employees meaning more unemployed. And costs will go up or smaller burgers will be made. This goes or every other company with minimum wage employees. Finding a job will be impossible, cut backs will be made. Less hours worked its not gonna help anything

Nothing good can come from this IMO, unless you consider goods getting more expensive to cover employer costs and workers getting scheduled fewer hours a good thing.

When did one job become the norm? I worked a full time and a part time job in college to pay for my rent/car payment and school. I didn't expect to make enough money from my full time job to be able to support myself and school so I got another job to assist with that. When did 40hours because a lot of hours to work, or 25 hours with a part time job? If you want to make more money go get another job, you can work 2-3 part time jobs and make lots of money. I sound just like my dad talking like this but it's true. If I had to get a job and couldn't find one that paid enough I would get 2, if that didn't work I would have 3.

The problem is becoming many employers are not hiring for 40 hour a week positions, they will hold it at 34 to avoid paying out benefits to employees. I know a few people who are working 2 part time jobs to the tune of 50-60 hours a week combined.

ETA: I typically work 50 hours a week at my only job. While another job would give me more disposable income, f that. I like my disposable spare time.

That's another thing. I don't like work to run my life. What's the point of having a lot of money when you can't spend it because you work all the time. Besides I'd your supporting a family and have no other choice

I can agree with both of you above, I did like my free time but I was fairly young with free time. I would rather have the nice car and new items over free time. Then I wanted a house so I worked my butt off for it.

Having economics as a minor because triple majors aren't possible at my school, what the x, tripage, and others have said is 100% in line with theory and practice...this is why immigration is important to lower cost of goods thus providing a positive income effect.

I was the same way. Speaking like I'm older than I actually am. Only 19. But when I was 16 I got my first job to save for my first bike. Then got "laid off" and found another and then they piled on afterwards. Better opportunities came and I took them and now am no longer in food and make steadily way over minimum wage and happy where I am. Worked my ass off to be where I am now. In only 3 years I've have about 7 jobs lol

Good for you. You make me feel old!!!! It's good to see younger guys/girls doing what it takes to get the things you want. Not giving up and saying there aren't any jobs or they don't pay enough. I am so tired of hearing this. I see a help wanted sign almost everyday I am out. I almost want to apply just to fill the position. Not that I need more work to do but just to show the owner that there are still people that want to work for a living and make money regardless of how much it is.

I remember complaining when I was 10-11 about not getting the reebock pumps for Christmas. I was so mad, my dad talked to me and let me know how much time he would have to work to get those for me and couldn't see paying that much for shoes. If I wanted them I had to work for them. I worked all summer long saving to get those. I never got them. By time I got enough money I just saved it because it wasn't worth that much for them. I learned what it was like to work for the things I want.

I guess when I got my first job I was making minimum wage and I couldn't have asked for anything more. I was just happy I had a job and made money. Who was I to think I deserve more money than they paid me. If I said anything at that time they would told me to hit the road and we will higher the next guy that comes in here for what you were making. I guess it's just easier to get on unemployment now, hell I didn't even know what that was when I was making minimum wage!!!!!

Lol sorry man. I'm very mature for my age. I'm currently at 1 job but I just got out of a really bad internship and am recovering. Worked my ass off and made about a grand since February.
I remember in high school this kid was collecting unemployment. Wtf how is that possible!

I work a LOT more than 40 hours a week, Lead engineer and manager of engineering covering multiple datacenters and 200 offices worldwide. I have a great salary, and I definitely earn it

No sympathy for people that have to work over 40 hours.

Minimum wage increase = prices go up and employment goes down.

The only possible positive will be a slight increase in exports which will be outweighed by an increase in outsourcing.

Basically if you look at the minimum wage when it was introduced and then adjust for inflation it should be about a dollar or two higher. I'm not advocating rasing it, but if they do... the smart thing to do would be to ease some taxes that businesses are paying. Health insurance for instance, my moms in that business and says she sees businesses that have the choice of no longer offering "company healthcare" or simply close the doors because its too expensive. Raising minimum wage would only add to the problem UNLESS you slacked off on some(a lot) of the taxes. But then the argument would be with less taxes less money goes into the economy.

I agree with what a couple people have said, "If you want a higher wage....get a better paying job." That's not to say everyone making minimum wage is slack or that finding a better paying job is easy, but if you want more money work more. Its simple more hours = more money.

Good point with the taxes.

If I can bring up something else. What do you all think about our tax system?
Complete overhaul?
Flat tax/fair tax/999

I am good with any of these. If you are not familiar with these plans read about any of them and you will see how much easier taxes will be on individuals/business's throughout the country!!!! This is one way our government can show they are really for "THE PEOPLE" and not just for themselves. Someone in government needs to stand up and say this doesn't work, it's way to complicated and we need to do something different not just add more tax codes to the already enormous tax book and see if that will work. They need to point out every single 535 members and ask them when the last time THEY did their taxes was. Let them know that there are millions of business's across the country that do their own taxes quarterly because they can't afford to higher an accountant to do them from the business.

Raising minimum wage would be a huge mistake. It devalues the rest of the working forces jobs. They keep creeping up on people with a skill or trade that don't also get a raise. As said before goods will go up as well.

As for taxes, they need to drop the IRS. No more deductions, no returns. A simple flat tax on everything. This ensures everyone pays. It also ensures that people aren't given money they clearly did not pay in. It stops the punishment of single people without children. There is absolutely no reason someone with a job for 3 months who paid in $2000 should get back $8000 because they have kids. While the single guy paid in $10000 and got back $1800. The system is broken as is.

minimum wage is anti-free market. it prevents the supply and demand forces from determining value, and reduces the need to work harder and persist to achieve success.

minimum wage should be scrapped
