Duck Dynasty - your thoughts?

I don't agree with the anti-gay views, even though I'm a heterosexual person. The backlash that Phil Robertson is being subjected to, including suspension by A&E is a violation of his first amendment rights. The people that are violating his rights should be the ones that are being punished.

Americans seem to be willing to throw their rights away in the interest of "political correctness". Guess what, in real life not everyone gets a trophy. I happen to think that "The Redskins" is a fantastic name for a football team. I also understand what the word "retarded" actually means, and sometimes it fits the situation. This is the pussification of America, and people seem very happy to add to it. Screw that, you can't have my rights, my guns, or my liberty and freedom.

So, what do you think? Here are a variety of stories, from a variety of sources. I don't want to be accused of media bias in my post.

Here is a good overview of freedom of speech.

You ask a very religious man his views and don't like his very religious answers?

I don't get people. He has the right to his opinion. Even if we don't agree with it, it's his right.

It's a joke. I don't agree with everything he said but I doubt he is going on the show with an agenda of bashing gays. (Never seen the show)

By A&E saying that his personal views do not represent the views of their network and choosing to block him it seems they are indirectly saying the have opposing views.

If a network wants to be neutral then take no actions when one of your show's cast members makes a comment in an unrelated interview.

This is a tough call. I don't believe what he said, but he has the right to his opinion and at least he can back it up with a legit reason (his religious beliefs). But the fact is when you put a old country boy in the spotlight, he's going to tell you how he feels without trying to sugar coat it. Problem is that he's representing a company (A & E). He should have worded what he said completely different, especially when you know the media will take everything out of context. I can see why the channel would distance themselves from him, its bad for their reputation and pocket book. If he would not have used such vulgar language I think it wouldnt have been so bad. But he gave the media ammo.

Same thing happened to the CEO of Chic-fil-a. People get so offended when someone exercises their first amendment right if it doesn't fall in line with their own views. They ask these questions knowing the answer they will get.

Good for him for holding onto his beliefs and standing up to it no matter what repercussions follow, right or wrong it's a rare quality in people these days.

Someone on here used to have the quote in their sig " I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it". I haven't seen it in a while, I forgot who that was.

I would think distancing themselves from him and blocking him is worse for their pocket book. You have to think about who the audience is for Duck Dynasty. Is it a bunch of country folks (typically are religious) or an audience that is going to take offense to his comments? I don't want to stereotype but I'm guessing the majority of people watching that show are going to side with him and be pissed that A&E is blocking him.

Best thing they could have done is take no action at all.

Pacquiao pretty much said the same thing.

Some people need to loosen their buttholes. booohooo.

And of course A&E will come to an agreement with him when they force him to state a public apology.

I don't agree with that. It's a show about him, not about A&E. When they do a show about the KKK, they aren't saying that they support them.

I have to agree with this. It seems today more than ever people just want to agree with the majority to avoid receiving criticism as opposed to standing up for their own beliefs whether they be religion or any other topic. Its easier to just go with the flow and dont dare stand out.

I see what you are saying but its not a documentary. He is a paid actor for A&E. And where the heat is coming from is mostly how he worded things, which could easily be interpreted as hate speech. And then we have the big problem, we were taught as kids to be tough and ignore people. Now people take everything to the heart which has lead to a big increase in teen suicide. Especially with gay/lesiban teens. So as a corporation A&E has to now look at that and determine if they want to associate themselves with a show like that. Like I said, I agree with him being in his right to say what he believed. But I also can see what kind of situation this puts A&E in. Same thing as the issue with that old country lady that cooks (cant remember her name) and the cooking channel cut her shows, walmart cancel cookware orders, etc. If A&E did nothing, then the media and community would turn this into a "A&E hates the gays" bash instead of looking at it as "A&E stands up for freedom of speech"

He wasn't on A&E when he made his opinions known. If he had stated them on their "air" it would be different. You can be a paid actor, and still have off-air opinions.

I hate unnecessary litigation, but this is one time where I feel it's appropriate. He is being fired in violation of his first amendment right.

BTW, before I forget. I totally get how other people may view this differently. That's why a court should hear this, and set precedent.

Neither was Mel Gibson, but you see what happened to him. Companies have to distance themselves. Not the best source but just came over this article, its going to get worse with the Jim Crow remarks. He's just giving the media and associations toooooo much ammo. Like I was told as a child, its not always what you say but how you say it.

I'm with those that think his first amendment rights are being violated. I think he is totally entitled to his own opinion. He did also state that although he doesn't agree with the lifestyle he is obligated by the same bible he quotes to love them nonetheless. Therefore, this agenda that no one can say anything that negatively speaks against the LGBT community is straight bull. There are many people that do not agree with that lifestyle and they should be able to freely express that without being harassed.

Ghey is not the same as gay. Ghey has nothing to do with sexual orientation.

True, but it doesn't stop ppl from saying it was from hate. He gave the media something to get ratings from. I'm pretty sure the interviewer asked these type of questions b/c he knew the guy would tell the truth and being he's a country boy I bet he banked on him not being politically correct.

Even though I like Mel's movies, what he did was wrong. Phil just said only God can judge us, but he don't understand it.

His comments on the black community pre civil rights era, we're taken extremely out of context.

He stated that he grew up poor in a farming area, and all the African Americans in his area were happy hard working folk like the rest of them. He didn't say that for the whole country, just his area.

I really feel like this is people (the media) turning an ant hill into a mountain.

I don't watch reality TV or know much about this other than it's a show that follows some country boys and their lives. Right? On this show are they scripted or just edited? If they are just edited then A&E are producing a show and making money on these people's lives. They didn't invent them. Are they somehow surprised that maybe this guy's religious beliefs and personal observations call into question some other lifestyle? So what? If these people express themselves on or off the show in a way A&E don't like then they don't have to do a show about them. They shouldn't be surprised that their subject quacks like a duck after walking like a duck.

From the A&E statement:
"We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson's comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty. His personal views in no way reflect those of A&E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely."

Now wait a second. based on his own personal beliefs and not reflected in the series based on these people's lives? So who's personal beliefs is he expressing on the series?

Most of the show is edited. They have a show called Buck Commander on the hunting channel and it is what started Duck Dynasty.

I would bet it's scripted also. A&E also bounced Dog with his rant against black people. He came back after an apology. I would bet this guy does the same and is back asap.

I guess you can say whatever you want and be free from imprisonment, but your job and the company that signs your check is a different story. Right or wrong it's not the first time or the last this will happen. It's only gonna get worse.
