Need opinions on this crashed 2009, please!

I have a bid on this 2009 that was crashed and totaled. Trying to figure out how high I should go. Can I get some experienced opinions on fixing crash damage and what I might be looking at repair wise?

I had an inspection service check out the bike as it's not local:

1. Bike has what seems to be significant or total oil loss. The sale page lists it as a running vehicle which means at least when it got to their yard, they started it and it engaged gears.
2. Source of oil leak is the stator cover being ripped off? I'm a car guy so this layout is foreign to me. Car alternators are no where near any oil.
3. Bike now cranks but does not run.
4. One photo looks like a few green coolant droplets.
5. Damage is mostly limited to lower left side. Nothing above stator even is scratched hardly.
6. Frame/controls/lights/seat/etc seem to be in very good condition. No dents in tank.

Questions:

1. Is this fucked and should I run away? I know it's salvaged for a reason. I don't mind moderate work. I'll replace the engine if I have too but at that point my money is probably better spent elsewhere.
2. Is the oil leak definitely that cover being ripped off? Something worse like a cracked block?
3. Is coolant likely from a cracked radiator or hose?
4. Is this normal lowside damage?? I feel like this is unusual.

Dude how much is the bid, you've asked this question in like 5 different places so far!

I've asked in one other place and didn't really get a response. Seemed like this thread gets more visits. Bid is currently $1,250.

It looks like it can still be threaded, but some light welding is fine with me.

1. Well salvage means that it costs more to bring it back to pre-crash condition than it is worth right? Well the thing about sport bikes is that the plastics can cost a TON of cash like $3000+ for an OEM set. So if the bike's plastics are damaged and it isn't worth more than that in value, they total. You can probably get an engine for that bike that is running for around $1500 so it might not be a bad deal after all.

2. Oil is leaking somewhere, not from the stater cover. That shouldn't have oil in it. Could be the case or something simple like the oil pan, hard to tell without pics of the bike with no plastics.

3. No idea here... again, need to see pics without the plastics on

4. Ok so I see damage on both the left and right side of the bike. Obviously the left side got it worse. But for that to happen in a low side, it would have had to have been going fast enough to catch something (maybe rear peg?) and then flip over, which is probably what happened when it damaged the stator. A low side by itself will scratch the **** out of the metal but it usually won't break it like that in my experience.

Is driving/flying out to see the bike not an option? tbh IDK how comfortable I'd feel buying this unless I could see it in person and confirm your questions.

Hmm. You're right, maybe it went down on the right side and flipped to the left and that's what caused the smashing. I didn't see any other damage on the right, and the damage does not go very high up in the left, though.

Is there not oil behind the stator/stator cover? I watched some video of a guy replacing one and he said oil will come out.

Auction is tomorrow morning and it's 6 hours away. Bid is already up to $1350. I'll probably take it to $1400 during the auction and give up after that. There will be others.

Good catch.

Bid is up to $1,500. Even if I got it for $1,600, by the time I'm done with auction fees and shipping it here it'll be $2,350. Then best case scenario it's $400 in parts. More likely $600-800. I'd be paying ~$3,000 for a bike that is probably only worth $3,500 once I get it back into shape.

I'll keep looking. Thanks for the help, all!

Bad deal, don't do it. Find a private sale. It's going to cost way too much to get it where you want it. I bought my salvage for 15, but I street fightered it so it wasn't much extra. You should have no problem finding a turn key for 4k ish.

If you find a turnkey 05+ with less than a million miles for $4k, please let me know.

If you wanna live done buy a crashed bike you only have two wheels on the road and it needs to be perfectly true meaning in line. Wrecked could mean bent forks bent or tweaked frame all equals death
