2006 CBR600 vs 2007 CBR600 at Thunderbolt 4/27
I took off of work on Monday and headed to Thunderbolt NJMP for the day. I hit the road around 330am and that gets me from Long Island to the track in about 3.5hrs with a stop or two. I have been to this track about 5 times now and it just keeps getting better. I brought along with my my 07 600rr track bike w/two brothers slip on -1 gear in the front and hotbodies plastic. I also brought my street bike, 06 600rr w/ two bro slip on and -1 gear in the front. I have never ridden the track bike before so I was a little nervous running in the advanced group on a new bike.
It was hot! I think it was about 92 degrees throughout the day and Team Promotion was running 2 groups. Advnaced, and intermediate and beginner was together. 20mins on 20 mins off. I was able to get almost 200 miles of track riding on the day! That is an unbelievable amount of riding. I drank about two 32 oz gatorades and and about 10 of the .5L bottles of poland spring and didnt piss once! By the time the day was through I was completely spent.
So i started off riding the 06, which was running mich pilot power street tires. I was running pretty good times consistently around 1:44 a lap but by the third hot lap or so these tires became greasy! I was all over the place! I then decided it was time to try out the track bike.
The 07 is fitted with pirelli corsa III green compounds all around. I wasnt using tire warmers and this was my first time on a race compound tire. This was also my first time riding an 07, and the first time ever riding my bike. The difference between my 06 and 07 is night and day. There is much more midrange pull on my 07, and it is so much more stable the way it tracks and holds lines. Neither bike has any suspension work or any suspension adjustments done on it at all. ( i am still a rookie when it comes to that). I know I am not comparing apples to apples since I have race tires on one bike, but the overall feel of the 07 is incredible. I was consistently running 1:36's with a few laps in the 1:35 range.
Overall I am so pleased with the new track bike and can't wait to get back on the track with it. I plan on heading up to Loudon and getting the race liscense as soon as I can. However, I can't wait to get back to thunderbolt!!
