Yeah I drive from Boston to get there! So NYC is a breeze.
The track is new and awesome. Do it!

Tony's Days are a good way to start out too. Well organized and
and very new user friendly.

As far as alternate plastics, that's totally up to you. If you ride both street and track on the same bike I find it a big pain to swap plastics before and after every track day. I have been doing track days for many years now and have only gone down once in the rain, simple low side. If you ride within your limits you should be safe. Its good to get some frame sliders though. This can save you some bucks for those minor spills!

About gear take a look at http://tonystrackdays.com
All the info is up there. In fact there are some videos that
show you whole deal.

Most all good riding gear will do. You dont need leathers a good textile jacket and pants will pass and bike prep is pretty simple.

It is trackday specific, but a lot of organizations require leathers. You can usually rent them from the organization or in some cases the track. In any event, you should be fully geared before you go track riding. Just because serious injury is minimized doesn't mean it cannot happen.

Good luck on your endeavor
