Talking The saga continues - Trackday #4

So I've posted up pic's from my first 3 trackdays and you guys have been really cool about giving me so good pointers. So why not keep the game going...

I did my fourth trackday last weekend at Motorsports Ranch in Cresson TX and again it was a hot sumbitch! They were using the 1.7 mile configuration, which everyone seems to like best, and I loved it. A very flowing track that looks a lot easier on paper than in real life.

After looking at the pictures I can see I need to get my head lower still and for me to do that I need to slide my butt back more (I don't bend that well anymore) plus I tended to overload the front when I leaned more forward. I guess I'll just have to do more trackdays...

Anyway, here are pic's from my first trackday in June and my 2nd trackday which was at this track (for comparison).

Same corner as above with a new lens (gotta keep the wife happy too).
A couple of guys stalking me here. I just went by these guys on the outside after the lead guy slowed WAAAY down that's why I'm so wide at that point. The guy on the liter bike in the back blew by me on the straight a few turns later but I cruised by him before the lap was over while he was doing some off-roading about 50 yards into the weeds (A man's gotta know his limitations)...

.

A couple at another corner that starts a complex where you try to take all three corners as one - dragged my first knee about 1/10 of a second after this pic (woo whoo!)...

The non bandwidth challenged can check out a slideshow of pic's here: http://thelonerider.net/pictures/msrc08082010/

Enjoy every minute of life!

Thanks. I just registered for Sunday so I'll be there.

Original plan was to hit both days but between coverage for work and doing some things with the wife she had planned I had to cut it down.

Did you see that ECR has a trackday on 9/12? I'm planning on hitting that one too.

Sweet! I will be there both days practicing everything from my other thread. I might go again on the 12th but since its a 5 hour drive for us its typically tentative on everyone's schedule here in west texas.

See you there.

Thanks guys

It's nice to hear some positive feedback even though I KNOW there is lot's of room for improvement. This weekend I'll be working on getting my upper body even lower and keeping the bike "balanced".

I'll see you on Sunday Dave. You can spot me because I'll look just like these pic's. I saw on the 1000RR board that at least one guy is driving over from New Mexico so you guys from out west are being represented.

One more just because...

yea definitely looking better man!

Try something else your next trip out, think of the bike as a tree (after all it's as big and heavy as one). When going through a corner, try to "roll" around the bike. See how that feels.

If you don't know what I mean, find a tree and give it a try. It will keep you more compact and will help you with feedback from the bike.

Thanks man, don't count on me posting any pic's of that one though...

Had another day at the track yesterday (104 freaking degrees) so the wife only got a few pics. My last tires were shot so I decided to give the Power Pure's a chance and it took me a few sessions to get comfortable with them. The turn in was a lot quicker and I was way early into corners for a while. The rising temps also played havoc with my tire pressures - had to let 5 pounds out of both tires twice after sessions where it looked like I was auditioning for the next Tokyo Drift movie.

By the time I got confident with the tires the heat had me dragging my ass as much as my knee so I backed off and practiced more on my throttle control and carving clean lines. One of the corner workers came by just before I left and said I missed the smoothest rider award by one vote. I'll have to whip that young 'un next time.

Anyway, obligatory knee dragging pic: this is early in the day and I was still learning the tires. This is the first half of a double apex corner and I've cut this one much sharper than I should have - the bike should be pointed almost at the camera here. Looks like I'm shaking my head and thinking "jeeze, again".

Cool man, next time work on getting that upper body down to the gas tank, it will help the bike stand up more so you aren't carrying as much lean angle which will = you being able to carry more speed ;)

+1 on the advice part...

This forum has some of the "cleanest" threads when it comes to actual riding and advice about motorcycles. So many forums are full of blowhards that you can't sift through the BS to get good info. Here though it's obvious that we have some guys that both know their stuff and are cool enough to share what they know without beating anyone down.

Relax your shoulders. You look like your trying to poke out there. Which organization your running with? THere's a couple really good instructors in LSTD and Ridesmart.

You sorted your gearing/suspension etc. yet? Cresson's one of those that runs different depending on..

Beware the seams out there...and backwards is hellafunner.

Thx for the tip, I'll work on that. I noticed I was developing the habit of leading with my inside shoulder - kind of like one would do when bracing for a tackle while carrying a football. You can probably see a bit of that in that last pic I posted. I'm hoping to hit a trackday at ECR on the 12th and I'm going to work a lot on getting the upper body into the correct position and riding more relaxed. Of course I have to get out of this damn "boot" the doc has me in for a screwed up ankle first...

I've been riding with Ridesmart. LSTD is more racer oriented so they don't have a lot of days where they want novices around. I'm liking the RS guys for the most part. They seem actually energized when they can help and it's obvious they want you to improve.

I had the suspension setup and it made a huge difference. I think it was OK when I started and it worked good on the street but by the 3rd trackday I had rasied my pace and the deficiencies in the setup started having an effect.

I really like the Cresson track. I can relate to that comment on those seems - had a couple of yee-haw moments hitting them at the wrong angle but it sure keeps one alert. RS will be back there in a month or so I think.

Enjoy every minute of life!
