Recommendations: Tracks in SoCal

I'm looking to sign up for my first trackday. I was looking at Buttonwillow on June 27th(Monday with Tracktactics), but it's like 3-4 hours from me, according to mapquest, for $120. But I'd probably stay the night before in a hotel and gas to get up there.

Another one I was looking at was May 22th (Sunday with Fastrack Riders) at Auto Club in Fontana. That's like 15 minutes from me. Perfect! A bit more expensive(~$250, yuck) but I hear they have full garages which I may need since I don't have anything for shade....

Anyone have other recommendations for a first track to start the whole experience off well?!

I'm going to the April 22nd at Auto Club. First timers it's like $150+ and then another $80'ish for the school.

Do they still have space? I thought they sold out awhile ago.

He was looking at May.

With todays gas prices, a closer, although more expensive trackday just might come out even. Depends on what kind of vehicle you have. But for us SD peeps. the Top 2 for me are, Fontana and Chuckwalla.

Im also looking into the May fastrackrider dates. Hope to catch you there.

Cool, itd be nice to meet some of the faces I always see on here! Plus I may be going alone because none of the guys I ride with have suits or seem to be pumped about going to the track right now.

I have a civic, which means I'll probably ask to borrow a friends truck for the day....and Fontana would be easier on my buds truck since it's not like 200 miles away....

solo track days are not ideal. it's really nice to have someone around to help you load and unload, set up, and settle you down if you have an off (which is unlikely).

who does the work on your bike? your tuner will probably know of some people headed out there that you can hook up with at the track.

i plan to be at Fontana on 22 May (Sunday). PM me as the date gets closer if you plan on being there.

I do all the work on my bike....granted I don't really have any major engine work. But as far as maintenance, that's all me.

The only thing I'll need to go to someone for is getting a custom map. But that's just cause I don't want to sell my house to buy a dyno.....

Will do about the PMing. I'll probably post another thread up once I decide on a day. But it's looking like either the 21st or 22nd of May.

I'll be doing the beginner level 1. The site says it's required to do the extra class deal too for the first time. Plus, it's probably a good idea for me anyway since I haven't been on a track yet.

CVR isn't that bad of a drive from me. Only like 2-3 hours...possibly for another day. I'm leaning heavy towards May 22nd at Fontana with Fastrackriders.

John Pearson teaches the beginner class for Fastrack, former AMA and Aussie superbike rider. Pick his brain on the day of the class. He will also set up your suspension since he is a suspension tuner too. Hope to see you guys on the 21st of May, that's what im shooting for my next TD. Lets set it up and pit together.

Yes, I just found the email chain I had with him about a year ago. He's a cool guy. I had him set the suspension up on that bike way back then. He had just recently wrecked his bike because of a hose clamp failing on the coolant return from the engine.

Yep thats him. How recent did he wreck? Sucks to hear that. I call him my "crew chief", since he's a chief in the navy and i ask him for geometry, and settings advice.. lol

I think it must have been last summer. He had the bike under a sheet because his lawyer said to. I guess he was trying to get Honda to pay for the damages because they recalled the hose clamps and it was one of the replacements that broke....I think.

Oh, so yeah, its the last off he had. Broke his wrist on that one too, so he was teaching the course in acs, and showing me the lines with one hand off the handlebars, showing me the apex... and im riding all wide eyed, with the grip of death.. lol. .

lol. Ya, he had it in brace I think. I'm excited to learn from him. Maybe I'll ask him to do it no-handed this time.
