first track day finally!

so i finally got my first track day out of the way since i started riding march 2010. I gotta say i had an absolute blast! if any of you guys haven't done a track day i would absolutely suggest it. Not only will you have an awesome time but you will learn so much too. I went to the Nelson Ledges track out here in Northeast Ohio. the track was a little bit rough but there were a couple girls riding on it so anyone who says its too rough is just a sissy. besides you cant beat 120 bucks. The organization that ran it was Motoseries and the guys were absolutely great. Great teachers and awesome people. the suit was only $35 to rent and it wasnt a crappy one either. unfortunately tho they dont have boots so the best i could do was borrow someones size 10 and i wear a size 13, so needless to say my feet were in pain but only when i wasnt riding. and i ordered my Alpinestars vented smx racing boots on friday with the help of Jason with STG. but anyways heres a few pics from the track. there were a bunch but almost all the other ones was just me on a straight away.

thats me in the back, about to do a nice pass out of turn 13.

the guy behind me was on some old 3500cc 2 stroke bike. it was pretty cool cus he was like 60 some years old. just out there having a blast.

and heres my favorite one. feel free to pick apart my body positioning. just remember im 6'3'' tall

me in the pit.

my best lap time was around a 1:23. they said i could probably run in the intermediate class or go to race school if i wanted. but we'll see sine i work on saturdays. but my next trackday is monday the 27th down at mid ohio. and im sooo pumped! ill let you guys know how it goes!

I have optimal fairings (got them from Disco) they are around $350 I think.

They are the best bang for the buck. I crash tested them too, they held up great, still using them with out repairing them.

I love my Optimals, had a very ugly high side with them and they held up great.

But yes the track is where its at, and get used to Ramen for every meal because this track riding gets expensive. And the addiction only gets worse.

Cool stuff, congrats. I like first track day threads.

The first time I got my knee down it was like "Woah what the heck was that" Your next track day you will probably be able to grind the sliders off at will Though I'm sure you know that's not really the point at all.

Have a blast on the 27th!

Awesome dude, I've got my first track day this summer, I'm so pumped. Does anybody know if the optimal track fairings for 05-06 will fit on my 04?? or if they make ones for an 04?

get home safe bro. but i got 1 month old pilot power 2cts on right now. plenty of life left after 1000 miles and 1 trackday. they worked awesome at the track. i got my knee down no problem with them. and the track is pretty rough and they didnt skip a beat. i would definitely suggest these or Q2's. dont have any experience with the Q2's but seems like everyone likes em and i may try em next.

I think I may try to make it out there on the 16th next month to check things out. I'm thinking of bringing my wife out there too so she can see what it's all about. She's pretty nervous about me wanting to take the bike on the track!!

Yea the q2's are awesome, that's what I have. I was just curious what others are running still. Never ran michelins, and don't really plan to change away from dunlop for a track tire unless after this set and some gp211's are gone. I may try the new bridgestone r10's. A lot of people, even diehard dunlop fans, have been swayed to switch to them. I at least want to try the 211's first, so I have something to go by when I try the r10's.

ok i just did Mid Ohio yesterday. and i gotta say wow. what an experience. very VERY fun! way more technical than Nelson Ledges. Its butter smooth with tons of grip in the hot sun. it took a while to get used to the elevation changes there since Nelson doesnt have any but it was awesome. There was alot of novice crashes there, two of them were in my group and i think it was because they felt pressured to say they wanted to go faster when really they shouldnt have. I was a couple feet behind this kid in the carousel in full lean and knee down and he panicked and grabbed the front brake and went down in a split second and i barely maneuvered around him right into the pit lane which i was impressed with. lol. but my instructor was a dude named Steve, i think his last name might be Dutel or something along those lines. he was awesome! he taught me quite a bit and is very serious about teaching. after 5 sessions with him they wanted to bump me up into the Intermediate class but i wasnt running water wetter and didnt have anything siliconed or safety wired. so i stayed in novice and they let us go out before everyone since we were lapping people. not bad for my first time at Mid Ohio and my second time ever on a track! Its a little pricey there but it was an absolute blast! weather was perfect. people were great. they fed us plenty of food and kept the ice cold water flowing all day! i cant wait to get back out there. unfortunately they didnt have the track photographer there that day which kinda sucks but oh well.

Great pics man. Looks like you had a blast out there.

It definitely pays to have your own gear vs renting. I'm sure you're on your way to getting all that taken care of. +1 to track fairings if you can afford it as they will pay off in the end to save your OEM's in case you crash. I never pushed myself too far since I've always ridden in street fairings but I know I could definitely go much faster if I had track plastics.

Keep it up, have fun with future trackdays, and kiss any free/available money you have goodbye! lol.
