2nd Race weekend report - Clipped at high speed

Report from my second race weekend at Infineon (Sears Point), typed with one hand. (cross posted from barf since it took me all morning to type)

600P gridded towards the back as expected, but had some good practice on Friday. I was on the inside and got an ok start. Got by 1 row, but then was squeezed to the outside through 2. Saw Quassi888 get a good inside line in 2 and took off. I got held up by about 5 riders, but picked them off one at a time. Got the first one quick on the inside of 3a, and took off after the next. Squared off the carosel an out drove him down the back straight. Took me until 11 to catch the next rider, and was close enough to take an inside line through 11 and out drive him. The next rider I got on the inside of 4 on the second lap. I knew my laps felt a little slower than practice but I was really having fun now.

Took me till lap three to catch the last rider in contact and a lap of showing him a wheel till I finally got him on thr brakes into 9. Finally, some clear track and I was able to pick up the pace a little back to some good lap times for me for a few laps.

Little later, leaders start coming through (still grid 50+ in the 600 class, making lapping an inevitability when your club's frontrunners are AMA regulars). Zoom, there goes Tigert, zoom...Carmen and two others. Last lap, Mikey Judkins goes around me in the carousel. Through 7 and the esses, stand it up over the crest of 8 and Blam!! Someone clipped my left bar coming by me over the crest of 8, instantly hitting my eject button at high speed All I saw was a flash of a rider, felt the contact and then airborne, land on my back and tumble, tumble, tumble. Came to a stop and catch my breath. I know I'm on dirt so I stay down and check everything over. Get to my knees and the cornerworker, Tuan (thanks man ) helps me to my feet and over the K wall. My bike continued to ghost ride, apparently trying to finish the race without me, making it as far as the turn 9 chicane before dirt surfing itself.

My gear worked great, the helimot back protector was awesome, barely felt the first impact. Arai too, nary a headache. Leathers burst a few seams but repairable. Bike not bad either, new upper, shield, stay and slider needed and have to slightly bend my rearset back. The cable on my Sidis snapped too, but hopefully repairable. Bike isnt starting though, so I need to look into it further.

Diagnosis to me? Carpometacarpal dislocation with unstable reduction in my thumb (writing hand too ). Docs couldn't get it popped in and stable, so I'm hard splinted till I can see the hand specialist to see if it gets surgically pinned. I hope not, but I can still feel the bone moving a bit in the cast Till then I'm in a sling and at work on vicoden

If anybody knows who hit me and took me out I'd love to find out. I didn't take some weird abnormal line and was probably 3-5 feet from the edge of the track, as I hit pavement first then tumbled in the dirt I know its a racing accident, but was a poor choice in passing lines considering all the room to my right (edit: I've since found out who it was and am contacting the club for my crash appeal. Rider is known for riding like an ass and hopefully will be disciplined)

I'll be back but it depends on my hand and bike repair costs as to when.

Thanks to Tuan the NMP cornerworker, Nathan (Newby1) for helping me load the bike and driving home and to Zoran, Jonathan, Linda, Mike, Ev and the rest of the Twinworks Factory for the hospitality and sharing your garage space with me.

In AFM (and probably other clubs), they keep track of your crashes. Too many, and you have to sit out a race. But if you can prove that a crash was not your fault (and it obviously was not in Brendan's case), it gets taken off your record.

Brendan, Hey that sounds like a rough getoff. I'm glad to hear your in one piece (except for your thumb of course.) I hope you heal up well and get back out there! Best of luck with your appeal.... -Luke=-[

so you were thrown from the bike, which continued on...funny.

glad you're alright. shitty about how you were taken out and how that sets you back physically and monetarily. get better quick.

All I can say is ouch, how its only my hand (and bike) damaged I don't know. Was the eqivalent to a high-side at 100 mph. Testament to the gear I was wearing.

I said it in the other thread on barf, but if AFM refuses to split the grid, I will not race in it next season. I will go back to trackdays only until I am under 110% of the AMA-class riders leading in AFM 600 class (I am at 117% now, rule to race is 130% of leaders) or I will get rid of the RR and race a smaller class size, like 650Twins, even though I love my bike.

I was glad 600P made it the full 8 laps, with maybe 5 yellow flags throughout the race. 600SB sucked though; the race was redflagged maybe 5 laps in, just when I was about to start trying to make my way through the next pack of riders.

Steve, there's half the bikes in 650T. By the time you get going in 600P, Tigert and co has a 1/2 lap already on you. If you are consistently at 110% of them you won't get lapped. That's 2:04 at thill and 1:51 at Sears. I'm just under 2:10 at Thill and 1:58 at Sears, not quite there yet.

Looking at it frame by frame it looks like it was intentional, but thats just the way I see it...

If you look close 2 frames before impact you can see that his lean angle is toward you.

Of course I have no idea if you guys are right beside eachother or one is more upfront or not, but this is just what I see.

Update:

Just got back from the hand specialist today. I need to have surgery I obliterated the ligaments in my thumb and thats why the joint won't stay in place. They will borrow muscle from my forearm to reattach the joint. Two months of recovery means my season is done and I won't be able to get back on a bike till December at the earliest.

Surgery is on my birthday next week too, happy birthday present for me.

Three seconds before impact. Apex of T8 is about 15 feet in front of me, then a quick transition to the right turn ess (8a). #559 slid by me while transitioning and before you stand it up out of 8a. #17 should have passed me to the inside, instead of following me to the track edge and trying to squeeze on the 3 feet left instead of the 20 feet to the right.

am sorry to hear about the degree of damage to your thumb Brendan. Let me know If I can help with anything. That is the shits about the surgery but at least you have the winter to heal up. Do you ski?

Yep I snowboard, so I will be able to do that this winter. I hope to be back aboard the bike for the 12/7 Zoomzoom day at Infineon. I hope to get back on the horse where I was bucked off of it.

I talked to the rider who hit me last night, aside from apologizing profusely, there wasn't much to be said. He effed up plain and simple. He didn't clip me, he body slammed me, as he said he was climbing over his front to keep the wheel down over the crest, which means there was no way he wasn't going to hit me, as he was drifting very hard upon impact where I was straight up and down.

Nice report, you have a great track to race at out there. Sucks about your thumb, hopefully you'll be able to ride soon. Tigert's a fast mo-fo, hopefully you go expert and can get away from most of the drama.

BTW, do they put an air fence where Haskovic went down now?

Not yet.

But locally, there has been a big fundraising push in the AFM (with all the major motorcycle trackday organizers helping out) to get it put up. The goal is $80,000.

http://www.afmracing.org/airfence.html?airfence

It's not clear to me, however, if the fence will be used solely for AFM events, or if they will remain in place for Infineon Raceway to use for other events (AMA, etc.) I suspect the former.

Glad you're okay.

The guy who took you out was wearing a Rossi replica suit, and pulled a "Motegi" on you.

I'd hope we'd rent it to AMA, further deferring our storage costs and possibly bringing more funding into the club reducing our own fees at Sears.

The fundraiser raffle will take place at the Oct 1 AFM round. Lot's of sponsors have donated a ton of prizes. I'm eyeing all the trackdays donated and the helimot suit, LOL
