This put a real somber mood on the entire weekend....
LRRS Racer Steven Almeida, R.I.P.

This just in from NHIS and LRRS official Jerry Wood:

Novice rider Steven Almeida, 37, of Seekonk, Massachusetts was fatally injured in
a starting grid incident during an LRRS race at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire on Saturday.

Almeida was gridded on the front row and had some difficulty, resulting in a slow start that had him drifting to the left. He was hit by several other riders from the fifth and seventh rows.

Steven is survived by his wife and a daughter. Services will be announced on the LRRS website as soon as they become available.

From a press release issued by LRRS:

The wake for Steven Almeida will be tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Birch Crest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd. in Swansea, Massachusetts.

The funeral will be on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church at the corner of Baptist St. and Rt. 6 in Swansea.

Steve is survived by his partner, Yulissa Godoy and his son Zachary, who is 2.

If anyone wants to make a donation to help the family the address is Yulissa Godoy, 72 Briarwood Dr, Seekonk, MA 02771.

sucks... I tend to think the unthinkable cant happen to me on the track as a novice. Right off the start too.

Bummer. That's the same kind of accident Scott Russell had on the Ducati few years ago at the start of a race at Daytona. I remember seeing how terrible it looked on Speed Channel, it's hard to forget. My prayers go out to the family.
