i was wondering how necessary race plastics are for track days. i don't have any but i'm itching to get on the track next spring. will bar/frame/swingarm sliders be enough?

It depends on how often you plan on doing track days. If you are like me and plan on doing as many as your wallet will allow, then yes they are worth it. I did my first couple of track days with sliders only and no probs. I plan on purchasing race glass, but not immediately.

Race skins are a fraction of the cost of oem and repairable. If you do happen to go down it is worth the investment.

its worth it if you're going to go often. I decided it was worth my while and what I did instead of buying race plastics was to buy used OEM stuff off ebay that was already rashed up. New tail was about $30, new tank cover $5, new mids were $100 but were in good shape (no crash damage). Then I bought a trackday upper from a guy that sells cheetah blems on ebay. that cost me $150 shipped.

When I am goign to the track it takes me about an hour to swap the body over. I get lazy if I do trackdays within weeks of each other and the mids/tank stay on. the tail has no light and the front upper has no headlights so those have to come off to street the bike again.

I crashed the bike a few weeks ago at the track and the spare bodywork paid for itself that day-and is still useable, although the fiberglass upper needs patching.
