Question RPM revs at start up

Hello everyone,

I understand that any fuel injected engine when being first started should start at high RPM revs, but my cbr600rr 05 does not do that ! when I first start it it starts at the normal idle speed of about 1200 RPM, other than that there are no problems what so ever but during maintenance the mechanic told me that there might be something clogged in the air intake or in the injection system and that it should be checked and cleaned.

So my question is:
Is that something I should worry about and get it fixed ? or better just ignore it as long as there are no other problems ?

Note: I live in Alexandria, Egypt, so the weather is fine (i.e not too cold and not too hot).

I think your OK. your bike starts normally....do nothing!

I never start a fuel inj engine using high rpm's.

I let my 09 cbr start on NO throttle, it idles at 14-1500rpms for about 2 mins.and then settles to 1200 then gentle throttle to get going. wait till engine is up to temp before revving past 6-7K rpm.

42K miles, bike runs good, no oil burn...etc

That is exactly what I mean, you see your bike starts at 1400-1500 RPMs then settles down to 1200 but my bike does not do that, it starts at 1200 and stays there which I do find a bit weird.

Sorry if I was not clear enough, I did not mean that I rev up my engine on start up, I just meant that the bike should start like yours at around 1400 then settles down at 1200.

So I still wonder if there is a problem or not, and if there is, then what could be the cause ?

Idles at 1400 for about 30sec. then drops ti 1200 rpm.

But I am starting it up after it is a (relatvily) stone cold 50 degrees F or about 13? C

when you start from cold, how long does it take for temp gauge to start registering?

mine takes about 90-120 secs and shows 100 or so degrees F.

what temp is your bike at when you cold start ?.

Where I live it is never that cold, the coldest in winter would be something like 9 degrees celsius (about 48 F). When I cold start the temp on the bike is 35 degrees celsius (95 F) and it takes like 60-90 secs to start registering.

it takes 1- 2 minutes at high idle when i start up from cold .

I show no temp on my gauge until i reach 100 deg F (1-2 minutes)

at your start temps maybe your cold start routine( FI cold start condition control in the ECU) is not called for = the high idle @1400 rpm is necessary.

no MIL lights or codes....?

Pardon me, I didn't really get what you mean, but on a cold start mine takes about 60-90 secs to start registering and then shows a temperature of 35 degrees celsius (95F) and it starts at 1200 RPMs from the first second.

Any way, since nothing else is wrong with the bike so I will ignore this bit (that the bike cold starts at 1200 RPM) so all I will do is that I'm going to add a fuel injector cleaner on a full tank and I will also change the air filter (it's about time to change it any way).

Depending on where you live in the world, a bike stored at 50F vs a bike stored at 95F, a bike in the warmer 95F does not need to start at a higher start up rev, this is due to the engine registering that the engine block is at a warm temperature at immediate start up. All leading back to, since your bike does not need to warm up quickly because the oil and block is already warm. Does this answer your question?

Yes I see what you mean and I guess that answers my question :), anyway it's winter time now and I'll see if it will start at higher RPM than summer :)

But it looks like bikes are different from cars because when I cold start my car in the morning or even on a summer noon (may be 28-30 degrees celsius) the engine starts at higher RPM then settles down at the normal idle speed.

My '03 starts at around 1500rpm I think it is, and stays there. Doesn't rev any higher from cold start. I know my 250r did.

Not sure about the your bike...but I understand from the manual that the 07+ have an idle air control valve which is basically a bypass to throttle if certain conditions are met (neutral, throttle, clutch), could be related to the bypass line or the solenoid itself... also could be injectors related?, ( if thats the way ECM controls cold start revs), maybe someone could shed some light??

well, the mechanic said that the injection system might be needing some cleaning, which I doubt it because I don't experience any problems while accelerating at any speed. He also said might be the air filter.

So it is very weird that my bike starts at 1200 RPMs and stays there. But again since I am not see any other problem so I will just ignore this bit.

Are you sure that your bike starts at 1500 and stays there ? it sounds like the same problem as my bike only that my bike starts and stays at 1200 rpms.

By the way 1500 RPMs is a bit high, I think you should lower it down to 1200-1300 rpms.

Maybe that is why. Will set it to 1200-1300, see if it starts at 1500 and drops down.

Update: set idle to ~1200. Started bike, started at 1200 and stayed there.

If it's cold enough mine will start at 2k for about a minute before it settles at around 14-1500, manual says idle for my year should be 1500 +/- 100 but no mention of any parameters regarding cold starts...I would change the air filter though because of where in the world you are.

When I start my bike when it's 70* F or above it starts at the set idle and stays there. When it's anything under 70 it starts at 2000rpm for a min and then drops down to the set idle. Set idle is 1200. My cbr is an 05. I don't see how there's anything blocked if it's starting at the set idle rpm. I would only consider something blocked if you had to give it some gas to start. You should be fine.

Damn I was in Alex last April and was dying to get a rental and go on a group ride!, .. Maybe another time...although I doubt i'll be anywhere near egypt anytime soon....
