Building Formula car with CBR600 engine

Hi there,
My name is Yogev, I am a student and my university is participating in the Formula SAE competition. For those who never heard about, Its an engineering competition between universities students around the world of building and racing a Formula car.
We are highly interesting in one of the CBR600 engine versions. My questions are:
1) Is there a preferred model (year) that is:
* Light weight
* Have a simple electricity requirement / don't have a lot of sensors.
* Have a performance options (without increasing the capacity)
2) Is there any benefit of turbo-charging a 0.6L engine (For example using Garrett GT15 or GT1241)?
3) The SAE rule:
"The engine(s) used to power the car must be a piston engine(s) using a four-stroke primary heat cycle with a displacement not exceeding 610 cc per cycle. "
4) In addition a 20mm diameter restrictor is located in the intake manifold.

20mm on the intake is smaller i believe than stock so that would be an issue i think?

2007 cbr600rr engine is the best 1

Theres always a benifit form a turbo....

mran556 The restrictor is there in order to limit the power the teams can produce from their engines.
It is one of the biggest challenges we are dealing with. (How to get maximum power to the wheel from a choked engine)

I wouldn't recommend it, unless you're trying to break top-speed tests. Is this Formula SAE? 2007+ engines are smaller and lighter as well as producing more power overall throughout the rpm range.

As for turbocharging, once again, it depends on what you're trying to do. As far as I know Formula SAE doesn't do top-speed runs? Don't you have time-trials and agility trials?

I'd recommend something with more torque down low and a decent spread of power in the midrange. Top-end shouldn't be a huge concern unless you're planning on regularly exceeding 250km/h

The Formula SAE team at UNSW, Australia uses an Aprilia SXV550 engine. IF you do use the 600RR engine, you would have to retune it, so I suppose you'll need a Power Commander/Bazzaz. Running those kind of restrictions on stock tuning will be pointless.

I suggest you start searching the web. There are many Formula SAE teams that have used this engine with positive results. I don't know anyone that might turbocharge it though... many teams used motec ecu for their tunning so I suggest simply start searching the net.

No matter what you do with air you are trying to run it through a 20mm intake so force feeding it in there will create a huge bottleneck for an already tight intake track. Lots of teams try lots of things so research what works and doesn't, my buddy was on a team 15 years ago that used a 600F3 motor that was quite cool.

The 07/08 ECU is designed as more of a "rev" power curve, the 09+ has more "grunt" but engines between 07-12 are the same so anything in those areas are the lightest, most compact. All generations of the RR will use about the same sensors so there isn't much use going older vs. new.
