Can you tell a 03/04 engine from a 05/06?

Hi Guys. I bought this bike used and abused. Harness is chopped. Fairings dont line up etc..

My cluster only shows MPH because wires are cut. I purchased a 03/04 upper harness and it didnt fit. Completely different. Now I have concerns that my 03/04 Frame MAY have a 05/06 engine and thats the reason that the harness I ordered for a 03 was incorrect.

Is there a way to find an engine ID that I can run to find out the year? Or maybe one of the gear heads can tell by a visual difference?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

From what I've read before, the external appearance is the same. Only some minor modifications were done internally. So you'd have to be able to open it up, and even then you'd need to know how to tell apart their internals. Maybe the engine # will reveal some details, but I'm not sure.

What do you mean by upper harness anyway, do you mean the harness that contains the fuel injectors and such?

If you think the've replaced the engine than no one here have the power to tell you whether its an 03-04 or 05-06. The easiest way and only way is to go to DMV and let'em run the engine numbers.

As far as the wiring harness it should mount right up to either motor though. Only difference might be a few slightly different connecters

So far my issue has been with the headlight/cluster harness. I bought one for an "03/04" as my frame is a 2003. The male plug off the cluster harness to the cluster was a different size. I remember something else (tip over sensor or running light, i believe) didn't fit or was absent all together. Ive been running with only a temp gauge and speedo. Its a real PITA to check your tank EVERT time I ride. If I forget the bike kindly reminds me by leaving me stranded.. Sucks.. Once I figure this out I can get the right harness.

You can just shake the bike (not when riding obviously), then you'll know...

I remember my GS500F used to have a fuel petcock, when the bike would start stuttering I'd just change it to go to reserve. We don't have that on the RR but you can also just keep an eye on your mileage? I do roughly 220km when the reserve light starts flashing, at which point there's 4L remaining, still quite a bit.

So if you know to check every 200km, you shouldn't really be stranded...but I can understand, it's a nuisance.

Has your ignition been messed with?
If you look under the key you can see if you have the zener diode. If you do not then it's an 05-06. If you do it's an 03-04. From the wiring the 03-04 ECM is different from the 05-06 and would have to be rewired for it to work. Or the ECM would have to be replaced as well

You can tell the difference between the 03-04 & 05-06 600RR engines the code that is cast on the head, it's on the intake side right beside where the thermostat housing is bolted to the head, it's big.

MEE-1G = 03-04
MEE-2G = 05-06

The connectors on the speedometer sensor are different between the 2 but it's just a matter of swapping the sensor.

I'm running an 05-06 engine in my 03 600RR.

The fairings on that bike looks like something CycleCruza would ride...

I've personally used a 03-04 sub harness on an 05, and an 05 sub harness on an 03. The product code is the same for both part numbers. They should be the same. Make sure the harness you bought is actually for an "03/04 600rr".
