Starting motor off frame

Hey guys I have a cbr1000rr motor I'm looking to test compression on. The motor is off the frame, no harness or anything hooked up.

I was wondering what the process was to get it to turn over so I can get some readings on it.

I've got a battery hooked to the starter and grounded but I believe there needs to be switch in order to get it turning over.

Anyone know?

no, you can just put power to the starter.

make sure there's oil in it!

how did you put power to the starter?

take the positive cable from the starter and hook it up to the battery, then take the negative cable that connects to the engine and touch that to the negative terminal of the battery,

it'll spin. for sure.

There's only a spot for the positive on the starter. So I'm grounding to the motor

are you doing it through the starter relay? or direct to the starter.

I can't comprehend how this could not work

Wire from negative on battery grounded to motor, wire from positive on battery directly hooked to starter
