What is this plugs purpose?

I recently picked up a 06 engine and it had a cracked case on the stator side. The crack goes somewhat into the threads of this plug in the engine and I have always wondered what it's purpose was. Casting hole maybe? It's on the stator side directly opposite of the sight glass I believe. Is it imperative that it's perfectly sealed, and looking at the top of it it looks like there's a bevel for maybe an oil port of some sort? Any information would be welcomed aside from blind guesses please.
