Illegal. Because of two things: 1) Proven gateway drug; 2) Mental Impairment, almost immediately upon initial dose. Some will say the addictive nature of cigarettes, and they're legal. Addictive, yes. Impairment, no. What about alcohol? Already went through a period of prohibition in history, but there again. Addictive, no (alcoholism is a disease); impairment, yes, but... not on the first dose. You have one glass of beer, depending on your bodily make-up and physiology, you're probably good to go. Smoke even a 1/4 of a joint, you're toasted (no pun intended).
Illegal. Won't be legal. Never will be legal for recreational use. Medicinal purposes, yes, but until they can harness the therapeutic value of it. And as far as it being bs as a gateway drug, it's completely validated as such. Of course, there are exceptions. But the data support the facts. Not only that, regular marijuana use has been linked to a number of ill physiologic effects, including an increasingly depressed mental state and lack of desire/motivation... we don't need anymore lazy Americans around here, living in their mom's basement because they smoke pot all day long.
