Thinking of Supersizing...

...my 600RR to a 1000RR. Thoughts?

I have had my '07 600RR for a little over 3 years now and I absolutely love it. But, ever since the '08 1000RR came out, I have wanted to get one and I know I cannot have both. So, I am seriously considering trading my 600RR in but was wanting to see what you guys with more experience have to say on the goods/bads of this decision.


First, there is no 'need' for the 1000RR; I don't feel like I am compensating for my freakishly small penis. I just love the look of them and I am a bit of a HP junkie so they appeal to me. I fully understand that this is a pure want.
Second, I know I haven't found the limit of the 600RR, but I am very comfortable with it and understand what I can do with it. There is still a lot of learning I can do on the 600RR so my desire to move to a 1000RR is not motivated by a feeling of superiority over my bike.
Third, the insurance change will suck if I go to a 1000RR with the same coverage I currently have on my 600RR; about $50/mo more. So, there would be no cost benefit of going to a 1kRR (not that I'm surprised, but I'm really trying to weigh the odds of what I want against what I should do).
Fourth, I don't really track my bike; I bought it mostly for commuting and having some fun with which is what I do now with the 600 and would probably continue to do so with a 1000RR if I make the switch (I wouldn't mind hitting the track here and there, just haven't had much opportunity to do so). I currently have a little over 13k miles on my '07 as I ride almost everyday and don't plan on changing that even with a bigger/different bike. I know there is no true benefit to having a liter bike on the street other than compensating for something, the 600 is plenty fast and powerful. So, I'm not trying to go faster to the grave, just really interested in the 1000RR even though I don't need that much power.



Other discussion questions:
-The local Honda dealer has 2 '09 1000RR's in stock; one is a Repsol replica trim, the other is a red with ABS. I love the look of the Repsol but it really sticks out and I like the idea of ABS on a bike so I'm leaning towards the red w/ABS. Anyone have anything good/bad to say about Honda's C-ABS?
-Is there any difference between the '08, '09, '10, or '11 1000RRs other than cosmetics (any minor mechanical/electrical changes that make a huge difference quality)?
-Are there any big changes coming from Honda in the way of a new version 600RR or 1000RR that I should hold out for?

My buddy at work has an 08 1krr. I've ridden it several times and it is astounding how much power the bike makes. By all means the 600 is plenty for the road. Some of the things you will find if you decide to go with the 1krr is that you will shift ALOT less. It is geared higher and doesn't you to be in a sweet rpm to have grunt, it just goes.

The one Con other than the higher cost of ins. etc., that i can think of is: If you are stuck in traffic doing less than 15mph you will kill your hand. The bike in 1st gear at idle does upward of 15mph so you would be force to be constantly moderating the clutch while in slow traffic.

Other than that, the bike i truely amazing. I would love to have the Red/Black one.

ummm you can put it in second gear and leave it there!

op, i would love to have a 1krr. but dont really need it. or i would have gotten i already. but as far as trading the 600 in, thats just dumb. they will rape you. sell it privately and then get the 1k.

i like that you realize that you haven't touched the limits and explained everything. go with what you want man, bikes aren't logical decisions in the first place and it's neat you realize that this isn't the most logical but you still want it. go for it.

Thanks man. I have ridden a buddy's '07 1kRR and it seems to fight you in the turns; is this true with the '08?

Actually, they offered me something I thought was fair as a trade in. My bike has a few nicks here and there, but overall is in pretty good shape considering how many miles it has. I have told a few friends it is up for sale to see if I can get a bit more for it but low mileage 600s are very common for about the same price. I think I can get $5k for it as a private sale.

That's probably because his suspension and tire pressures weren't suited to your riding style. Dialing those in can make a bike feel completely different. You shouldn't have to fight any newer bikes since there's so much adjustment available.

If money isn't a big deal you might want to wait until the 2012 models come out. At that point all the Japanese makers will have their traction control, abs, etc. packages on the bikes.

I'm probably going to get a 1000 in a couple years too but I want to see what the new models are like first.

If you're not the kind of person who has to test the limits of a bike then go for it. Don't forget to check how much more insurance will be tho. I personally wouldn't even think about getting a liter bike because the 600 is more than I need for the street.

Well, I wouldn't say I'm out to find the limits; I've ridden my 600 well and know it has more to give. I figure I'll never find the limit of a 1000 so I doubt I'd try.

I did check about the ins though (see original post); about $50/mo more (so, about double overall, huge suck), if I keep the exact same coverage from the 600 to the 1000.

One thing that I have heard from other guys that ride sportbikes. Get the 1000. That way you don't have to prove anything to yourself. Good lick with your decision. As in the end it is YOUR decision.

I've decided, I'm going to get the red '09 with ABS.

Thanks for all the opinions guys; I'll admit though, I was a little surprised to see the overwhelming favor for the 1000RR. Guess I figured someone out there would call me stupid for even thinking of giving up my 600.

the#2 poster is right sub 15mph sucks, but you get used to it. plus you have to excersize even more throttle control, as the bike wil hurl you over if youre not gentle with it, other then that, the extra torque and hp, make it so much fun.. i can ride my zzr harder then the rc, but the rc is so much more stable and so much faster. the seating position might be different as well, but i'm sure you checked all that out already.
I'd go with the repsol, but to each his own.

I have the ABS on my 600. The only time you feel any weirdness to it is if you roll up to a stop sign behind another vehicle. When that vehicle goes and you roll forward a couple mph for few feet and pull in the lever again the lever is very soft. Manual kind of eludes to it saying lever might feel different. Dealer felt it, called Honda who confirmed it. Other than that all I can say is straight up stopping wet, sandy, or dry you can grab a handful of brake and bike is stops nice. Good luck with the 1000. The guys I know with the 08/09 say they don't have any oil issues. Not sure if its the placebo effect with those who burn oil or they can't read the dipstick correctly. There might have been a clutch recall in 08.

Picked her up today. I tripled the mileage on the way home from the dealership; I have never purchased a new vehicle until today, this was my first; it had 5 miles on it and now she has 17. I still miss my 600RR, it was my first and I loved it; but, I kept my hand out of it, limited myself to 4500RPM, and I'm already amazed that I don't have to wail on it and I've barely done anything. I'm already looking forward to engine break-in being over.

Anyhow, I'll have some stock and aftermarket parts for the '07+ 600RR for sale here pretty soon.

Congrats on the new bike. IMO the red/black scheme on the 1kRR is the best one out there. Pics when u get them.

I really wanted the red/black on the 2010 but they didn't have any; the guy who actually set me up bought the last one.
