For those with Android phones

So it's come time for me to finally upgrade the factory head unit to something more useful. Recently switched from IOS back to Android and wondering what some people's experiences are here with whichever head units you have. I'm specifically interested in hands free calling, SMS reading, and possibly (but not at all necessary) speech-to-text capability through bluetooth.

Years ago I had an iffy experience with a head unit that wouldn't perform half the functions that were advertised for an Android but worked perfectly with an iPhone.

So the question: What head unit do you have and how well does it do the things I mentioned above with an Android phone?

What do you mean by head unit? Are you talking about a bluetooth earpiece or like a car stereo head unit?

I used to use my Galaxy S3 to play music thru bluetooth, but the dash unit is something I bought like 3 or 4 years ago when I wired my sound system and my GS3 was running cyanogenmod. Too many factors to weigh in, plus I never used text-to-speech or hands-free calling. The dash unit did have a wired microphone and a phone button to access your contacts and such. So my experience isn't that relative to your question.

I'd figure out a phone that you like for all of its other features, and then research bluetooth problems related to that phone. I feel like I'm never aware of the problems with the new technology I just purchased until I find the specific problem and google it. Then I see its a common issue.

Do you already have the head unit? What brand/model if so, or which ones are you considering? I'd guess it would have to be pretty new to support the features you want.

I already have a Galaxy S5. I'm trying to decide which head unit to get. I used to have an Alpine CDE 133BT in my S2000 years ago but that was used with an iPhone. I see that Alpine is selling something similar now, CDE 143BT, which is what I'm considering. On their website though, they only mention iPhone control.

I haven't paid any attention to car electronics in the past few years so playing catch up is a bit tedious...

Ya, I hear you on that. I spent a bunch on car stereo stuff when I was 18, nothing since. I know places like best buy and whatnot have some demo models hooked up so you can test them. Maybe go see if you can test your phone on a demo dash unit? Even if its not the exact one you want, see if the capabilities are there with certain brands.

I'm friends with the guys at the local car audio shop where I bought my stuff. I can call and ask them if they know of any good dash units with those kind of capabilities if you would like.

Thanks. I'll head out to a local Best Buy and toy with display models. If I can't find something that suits me from there I may take you up on that offer.
