Anyone knowledgable on turtles?

My wife and I found a water turtle on the road. He had been struck by a car probably only a few minutes before we got there. We have a number for a local reptile vet and will be going first thing in the morning. Until then he is in a kid sized pool with no water in it, in our garage just chilling out. His shell is broken pretty badly above his left arm and onto his left side. We were able to stabilize the loose shell pieces and put a non-stick adhesive bandage over the missing area. I've read not to put him in water as it may cause a higher likelihood of infection. All of his limbs are responsive and he's very active. Also no perfuse bleeding. Anybody that has any information or first hand knowledge they would like to share would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Hey man, I'm pretty good friends with a local vet and she once told me all they do is pretty much super glue and secure broken shells. So I'm assuming they will glue the broken pieces together and then secure it with some medical wrap. I think you are doing a great job helping it and keeping it safe. Good job man! Keep us posted with any updates!

He made it through the the night and is still curiously moving around. No vet clinic has a fiber glass repair kit in town, nor are they familiar with turtles. We've called a rescue that put us in touch with someone about 2 hours away. Hopefully she can do something for him. I'll update tonight on how things went.

Okay, we got him to a turtle specialist that works with the north Alabama wildlife rescue. She said she has rehabilitated turtles that were in worse condition so we will see how it turns out. I'm staying in touch so I can stay update on how he's doing.
Thanks to everyone for the responses.

What kind of turtle is it? Just out of curiosity. Red eared sliders/painted turtles are the most common amphibian turtles in north america. Had one as a pet that got too big after upsizing aquariums 3 times. Finally let him go in a lake full of similar turtles. They rehabitate really well. Just saved one a couple weekends ago that was trying to do his impression of a speed bump in the road. Hadn't been hit yet but wasn't even halfway across a busy road. Girlfriend spotted him as we went by. Circled back, picked him up, then dropped him off at a nearby wetland preserve. He was probably heading there anyway. Where we found him was next to a pond that had turned into a muddy field from drought. Was probably heading for better digs.

He's a yellow eared slider. The road we were on is right by a river dock and he was headed that way when he was struck. He ate and the lady said she was able to clean out his wounds. Things should turn out well for him thankfully.

Awesome to hear and good on you for doing such an awesome thing. Sadly, most drivers would have driven right passed it or even over it not caring.

Post some pics!!

Last weekend in the 12 mile stretch from my lake house to hunting/farm land I stopped to move 4 turtles out of the road(saw probably another 8 or so just chilling on the shoulder), and picked up another one crawling through the field I was disking up. Little guys were everywhere!!

The only pictures I have of the little guy is when he was all busted up.
