Happy Mondays! For your noggin.
I posted an article a while ago about DOT, Snell, and ECE standards and how odd it was that NHTSA wouldn't accept a helmet certified by a more stringent Snell or ECE but not DOT for the US market. Well, I found another that claims these more stringent tests and certifications may not be all that great either.
I didn't think too much about the topic but the author does make a good point that the helmets in use today, generally speaking, are designed to protect against the hardest hits. What gets overlooked is the ability of a helmet to protect a rider in low speed crashes where the helmet is too hard to absorb the energies and that impact gets transferred to your head and results in concussions.
Although the innovation is now specifically for the dirt bike crowd, it's a matter of time before it spreads to the streets as well. Have a read if you've got a few minutes.
