Massive amounts of overtime. Its sickening how much they get, and most of em know how bad it is, but its the system in place that allows it. I dont blame em, I'd do it too.
Crazy how a patrol officer can make more than a city's mayor, but it happens all over.

It's crazy I know, some start at 60-80k+ it just depends on the area, experience, and level of education. It can be a high stress job. For me, 94k is a decent salary but not worth it to be a cop.

I've looked at it here, starting wage is 34k/yr, have spoken to a couple officers that did their bike licence here, one woman said the hours are horrible, she was on her 7th day of 9, 10pm-6am, then back at work the next day 4pm-midnight.

Not my kind of job, especially when I get 50-60k just for sitting in an office answering a phone. :p

While the system is corrupt and yes they do get paid insane money, the city had to do it. They were facing a crisis a few years ago because nobody wanted to join the NYPDbecause, let's face it, $35k a year is basically working poverty. I had a friend who was a sergeant at the time tell me that two rookies he was taking out on the street would never buy lunch when they stopped and would always make an excuse about how they weren't hungry. Turns out, he found out the guys could barely afford their own rent. Christ the city even had to cancel a years worth of classes because enrollment was so low.

Yeah they may get paid high when compared to the rest of the country, but for NY, it's basically the equivalent of $50k at best.

As far as this stupid idiot being a NYPD cop and having been arrested 3x's (THREE F'N TIMES?!?!) yeah I don't know, she must have been "serving" someone high up in the department.

Same here, not my kind of job. Some cops/ sheriffs in my area would pull 12hr shifts, luckily it's a quiet city. For me, I prefer being alone messing with financial numbers. I finish school in a year and I'm going into the Accounting field where I can be by myself.

I wouldn't mind another job, but with no qualifications and a family to provide for, its something I have to do.

I've looked at other work available around here like labouring, sales e.t.c. but are all 30k/yr.

That's what you think. LOL!

You're NEVER alone in the Accounting world. You will be surrounded by other Accountants and upper management. I did Accounting for many years, then switched to Financial Analysis.

It's a great job though if you're in a good company. The money is good and you have potential to make a lot more as you gain experience, without the need to put in massive overtime, and deal with the angry public (like a cop does).

Good luck.

I earned 50k this year after tax. Paid 9k in tax. Would have earned more but I took quite a few days off.

Domia, the average salary for a degreed professional in the USA depends on the degree. But to give you an example, an Engineer here fresh out of college will usually earn $60k/year average (before taxes). Taxes are normally around 25%, although that's pretty simplistic because it all depends on whether they're single, married, have a home mortgage, etc. A Software Engineer earns more, so does an Electrical Engineer, and topping out with a Chemical Engineer, who will begin his/her career at $80k/year.

An Accountant will usually start at $45k/year out of college.

Nurses about $50k/year to start with.

The nice thing is, as these professionals gain experience, they start making more and more. It's not at all uncommon for them to start making close to $100k as they reach "senior level" experience.

However, there is a big income gap between the degreed professionals and non-degreed professionals. The difference can be as much as 50%! Usually around 30%.

But if you have any technically skilled college degree with some experience, and you're willing to work hard, US companies pay handsome salaries if you can make it over here. That's how so many people from around the world do it. People from India & China use this as a fast track to make a good living in the USA. And that's the nice thing because US companies don't really care where you're from. If you have the skills they need, speak good English, work hard, don't have an attitude problem, they will hire you.

.
this is crazy, I'm a management engineer working as junior channel marketing speaking italian, english, french and a little of dutch, my first sister is a nurse and the other one is working for UN as immigration flow check and custody protection for ppl that got raped and other bad things..
If you take our three salary together we hardly hit 60k/y, we have "free" hospital this is true but i dont think that an healt insurance will cost 40k $ over there.
Not to say also that we pay 10$/gal the petrol, we have tax on first house, car, bike, water, tyres, IVA at 22%(tax on everything) etc....
I need to seriously start thinking going oversea.

Even then I don't mind working with a financial team, to me that's almost working by yourself compared to the job I have now, but I will probably start with a small financial firm doing taxes for individuals, there won't be much interaction there, I will prepare the return and then submit it for processing. It really depends on what your doing in the accounting field as there are many sectors out there, at least you have a smaller area of responsibilities and have one office. Depending on the salary offered to me I might even do auditing. I'm just burned out of my current job.

I'm an operations manager of a security & alarm company. I'm in charge of a minimum of 64 employees and 8-10 job sites. I have to move around and check our company sites throughout the day. Plus I'm also in charge of the hiring/ firing. It's a freakin burn out plus add full-time school into the equation. It pays for tuition and other stuff but it requires a lot of work that I don't get paid enough for. I know accounting requires a lot of work but at least I can find a fix 9-5 schedule. Hopefully I can be ready to take the CPA test in a year because that's where you make $$$.

BTW, thanks for your input on the accounting field. I'm excited to graduate and finish school.

RN's make a good amount of money here in NorCal depending on the position. You can make tons of cash if you are single and a workaholic. Your current job seems to be more relaxed though being in an office I can appreciate that. It can be a burn out when your always on the go.

Get into the construction field or work for energy companies like Enbridge as an equipment operator or a laborer and you can pull $100k/year.
