Egypt contest penalty decision

Fifa has received an official complaint from Egypt over Brazil's match-winning penalty in their Confederations Cup game on Monday.

Referee Howard Webb is accused of changing his decision after advice from a fourth official who may have seen a TV replay.

Officials are not allowed to use video evidence to aid decisions.

"The matter of the complaint is about the process which led to the decision to award the penalty," Fifa spokesman Nicolas Maingot said on Tuesday.

Webb appeared to signal for a corner after Egypt's Ahmed El Mohamady handled on the line.

But after play stopped for treatment to the defender, Webb opted to show a red card and award a penalty, which Brazil duly converted to secure a 4-3 win.

As far as I am aware there is no rule allowing video evidence

Gharib Chawki
Samir Zaher, the president of the Egyptian FA, said after the game that he would lodge an appeal with organisers.

"We will not protest against the penalty being awarded because that was the right decision, but the referee did not give the decision immediately - he gave a corner," said Zaher.

"Then he waited two or three minutes and showed the red card and awarded the penalty."

Egypt assistant coach Gharib Chawki also alleged that the manner in which the penalty was awarded was improper.

"As far as I am aware there is no rule allowing video evidence," he said.

"We're not contesting the referee's decision but the way it was made. Or maybe the rules have changed and nobody has told us."

"The decision was changed after a statement by the fourth official, after watching the monitor, that it should be a penalty."

Egypt's complaints were given added weight by admissions from some Brazilian players that they believed Webb had been swayed by advice from Australian Matthew Breeze on the touchline.

"The referee didn't see the penalty and the linesman didn't see it either. It looks like the fourth official told him over the radio," said striker Luis Fabiano.

The controversy echoes the sending-off of France's Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 World Cup final against Italy.

It has been alleged, although subsequently denied by Fifa, that Horacio Elizondo was advised to dismiss the three-time world player of the year for a head-butt only after one of his assistants viewed the incident on a pitchside monitor.

Fifa has consistently chosen extra manpower rather than technology to help referees and matches in next season's Europa League will see two extra officials stationed behind the goals to monitor penalty-area incidents.

Replays have been employed with some success in tennis, rugby union, rugby league and cricket.

I will say this before any one jumps the gun Brazil deserved a penalty that is for sure.
The controversy is about how Howard Webb changed his call from a corner kick to a red card + penalty regardless i am still proud of the Egyptian National team .
I wish my wife's cosuin Mido was playing watch out Italia come Thursday
the underdogs will put up a battle that is for sure

Fifa rejects complaint over Webb

Fifa has rejected a complaint from Egypt over referee Howard Webb awarding Brazil a match-winning penalty in their Confederations Cup contest.

The English official initially appeared to signal for a corner after Egypt's Ahmed El Mohamady handled on the line late on in their 4-3 defeat on Monday.

But Webb then sent off the defender and gave a penalty which Brazil converted.

Egypt claim Webb took advice from the fourth official who may have seen a TV replay but that was rejected by Fifa.

Fifa said in a statement: "A thorough analysis revealed that the decision in question was achieved through teamwork between the match referee and his assistant referee number-one Mike Mullarkey, who confirmed the offence to the referee from his clear viewing angle."

In questioning the process which led to the decisive penalty, which was scorded by Kaka in the final minute, Egypt assistant coach Gharib Chawki had said: "As far as I am aware there is no rule allowing video evidence.

"We're not contesting the referee's decision but the way it was made. Or maybe the rules have changed and nobody has told us.

"The decision was changed after a statement by the fourth official, after watching the monitor, that it should be a penalty."

Egypt's complaints were seemingly given added weight by admissions from some Brazilian players that they believed Webb had been swayed by advice from the fourth official, Australian Matthew Breeze, on the touchline.

"The referee didn't see the penalty and the linesman didn't see it either. It looks like the fourth official told him over the radio," said striker Luis Fabiano.

The controversy echoed the sending-off of France's Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 World Cup final against Italy.

It has been alleged, although subsequently denied by Fifa, that Horacio Elizondo was advised to dismiss the three-time world player of the year for a head-butt only after one of his assistants viewed the incident on a pitchside monitor.

Webb admitted making an error in awarding Manchester United a penalty when the champions were 2-0 down at home to Tottenham in April and he wrongly judged that Michael Carrick had been fouled in the box.

Fifa has consistently chosen extra manpower rather than technology to help referees and matches in next season's Europa League will see two extra officials stationed behind the goals to monitor penalty-area incidents.

Replays have been employed with some success in tennis, rugby union, rugby league and cricket.

I agree with you in a sense never less evrey team would love to win this tournament the bragging rights man that will go with this trophy will be huge

The ** Azurri ** for example would love to win it regardless of who they play in the final being Brazil or Spain .

Just like i am sure ** Spain ** would love to win it after being crowned Europian champions .

Lets not forget **Brazil** would like to repeat the task and win it again and may be threepeat in 2013 as it will hosted in their nation a year before the next World cup which will be played there as well

I have to disagree. I'm from Brazil and have seem our team do this over and over again. If the other team is not pressuring all the time, they get sloppy and mess things up. Even for the world cup. You hardly ever see Brazil beating a 'weaker' team by a large number of goals. If they finish the first half with a good margin, we know we'll be suffering the entire second half. Drives me C R A Z Y!!!!

Of course Moe, everybody wants to win....and like you said, every team has something to prove: Italy that they're still world champions, Spain that they're still the best team in europe.....

ahaha really? it would drive me crazy too!! btw also italy suffers a lot with the weaker teams....

UPDATE. just heard our C.T Lippi saying that probably (he's still tinking about it) he's going to change most of the players in every match....i think it could be dangerous if we want to aim to the victory, but it's a good move to see what's the best solution: like i said it's not the world cup, it's a tournament :icon_lol:

Spain will be pretty tough to beat watch out Brazil Torres , Villa and co
want another trophy plus the Euro championship

2 African teams ( South Africa & Egypt ) or 2 Arab teams( Iraq & Egypt ) in the semi final
will be a first in the confederation cup tournament all three teams played their hearts out
so far

I didn't watch Italy X Egypt, but watched Brazil X Egypt and I must say, I was impressed by Egypt's players skills. A lot of passes between players close to each other, like the Brazilians do. Ball control and possession. Pretty good.
Now, a question. Who thiks the Brazilian soccer reign is over?

I did watch the match mate aside from this tournament i always route for the
Azzurri ( Forza Italia ) in the world cup they are my fav team even though they enjoy taking care of business the hardest way.

BTW where is cassano , Del piro , Felipe Inzagi i disagree with any one that says Del piro & Felipe are done and are getting old . The match tickets against Brazil are sold out it will be a major battle no doubt about that Italy wants to revenge the 2-0 loss against the Samba boys that took place at Wembley staduim but Brazil wants to confirm their position & beat the wold champions in this tournament will see what unfolds come Sunday

heah it's going to be a great match....
btw i think one of the greatest problem is that our players are not used to play together...if you take them individually in their respective clubs they're fabolous players ( look at Toni and Iaquinta)....we need somebody like Del Piero to be the missing ring of the chain, someone who can be a real captain and direct the team

hey Bizarro, i don't think the reign is over, but things have changed a lot....and i'm not talking only about brazil, what i mean is that the general level is growing up, a lot of small nations now start to have a sort of "tradition" (don't know how to explain it better, sorry) and every year they grow more and more

What about Inter Milan Serie A champions not one player from there team on the Azzurri roster do you think Lippi is to scared to try different players combo & formation & simply being too traditional or its the media effect cause evrey one knows they will tear him up to shreds if he does not put results on the table

that's the point Moe, you're right! if you remember lippi said he would have changed the players....actually he did it but after the first half he switched again to the previous team, and that exactly what happens everytime the national team plays: he make some changes, which doesn't work ( of course, you need at least 3-4 matches before the players can play very well together and to see if the changes are worth....) and he switch back to the previous team before anybody can say something....and that's not a Lippi problem, almost every CT in Italy has this problem....because every single italian will argue :icon_lol: there used to be a nice tv commercial about the world champion final and about italy (and italians): 1 match, 3 referee, 22 players and 64 millions of CT (the population of italy) :icon_lol:

Brazil all the way. If they play the way they did against Italy, it will be very tough for any team to beat them. If the midfield does its part to get the ball to Fabiano, Kaka and Robinho, they'll be set. Unless they repeat the performance of FRA 98 against France. Toughest game to watch in my life...
