Track newb - now I'm hooked

After a few years of riding street, I finally got a chance to get my RR on the track. Completed the 1st phase of FAST, a riding school run by former road racer Michel Mercier here in Ontario Canada at Shannonville race track.

Well, all I can say is I found my crack and now I'm hooked.... Amazing experience although we only got 7 - 10 minute sessions. It's a really well run course, structured and safe.

The cherry on top was that I shaved 20 seconds off my laptime by days end and was dragging my knee consistently by the 4th session. Funny thing is I thought it would be a pretty rough feeling but it was like butta baby!!

Here are a couple of pics from the early sessions....

true dat! however track rentals here is very cheap only $40 ($240 for 1 year membership fee & unlimited use of track) for the whole day & i spent a full tank of gas running around the track.

it's the things like tires that's making me hold off my obsession, PP costs $400 over here, M3's are cheaper but may take me a while before i save some for a set of good rubber. brake pads, mine are running thin so i'll need to cough up $'s for a set of SBS Sinter HH pads.

but it sure beats doing drugs.

I've done trackdays with TakeIt2TheTrack, and Trackdaz, both are great, but i prefer ti2tt because they include lunch and run a really tight program.

If you think trackdays are expensive, just wait till you start racing. ...then you'll really be broke!

Hi Razorman1,

I'm going to Fast phase 1 in september, can't wait to try it. How did you find the course ? How long were you on the track during your entire day course ? Will you do phase 2 ?

You can't beat that rush. The good part is that is doesn't fade away w/ time, each trip to the track is just as good. Just remember to spend the cash where you really need it.....track time, suspension, tires.

Hey bro,

The course was very good. I talked to alot of people before signing up and was a bit torn as many said it was awesome and others said they have learned more from experienced riders at regular track days. I'm personally glad I went.

Michel goes through alot of the basics that many take for granted. The morning is in class theory where you'll learn about lean angle, turn in, apex and exit points, body positioning, braking etc. It's a little slow but it's good information. Listen, you will learn something for sure. The nice thing is it also alows you some time to get the butterflies out of your stomach before getting on the track. I was pretty nervous, it being my first track experience.

As I mentioned above, you get 7-10 minute track sessions. This was a bummer for me because I was stoked to be out there. The good thing is they really allow you to wade into the deeper water at a controlled pace. They start you out with a few sighting laps and the instructors really keep things in check. They also rotate the riders behind the instructor so each person has a one on one experience who adjusts to each persons riding ability.

After each track session, Michel addresses each group and basically adds more onto the foundation you should have built in the last session. FAST uses the Nelson track so it doesn't allow you to go buck wild like say Mosport would. I basically used 3 gears but I was ringing the bike's neck at points. LOL

I guess if I had to complain about the track, my beef with the Nelson circuit is that it has only 7 turns and unfortunately, 5 of them are rights leaving only two lefts. The lefts are also tight and slow, not to mention that corner 7 has an asss puckering piece of concrete that you go over if you blow your line. Although traction really isn't a problem, it plays with your mind a little.

Be careful on corner three too. Since two leads to a bit of a straight, a few people came into 3 hot and went off. Thankfully, nobody went down, just a few dirt/grass excursions.

I won't be doing phase 2, at least this or next year due to fundage. I've already signed up for a few more track days starting with the goloracing day on July 8th for this season.

Good luck with your day, you'll enjoy it....

I can only imagine. I just bought a back protector, braided lines and signed up for a few more trackdays and now I'm TAPPED. Not to mention that I will have to buy tires shortly when I get more track time during a regular track day.

Question for your regular track rats. How many track days do you get out of a set of Diablo Corsas with somewhat aggressive riding? I know that track length, number of turns, rider style etc will vary tire wear blah blah, just looking for a high level response.

Fosho, that is what the pro and guys in expert class tell me, I already know the smoother you are the faster you are and getting the knee down isn't everything. How is the new bike coming along?

Got a few days out on her last year. Suspension is way off. I have a new spring to install. I have to sort out gearing too. Hopefully by mid summer, she should be sorted.
