Loss of power and MPG ???

I've recently been noticing that I can't quite get the same gas mileage I used to, even when I take a whole tank of gas and ride conservatively. I also feel like I don't quite have the power available that I once had when I really get on the throttle. Anyone have any ideas as to why??

A friend mentioned changing the air filter, I haven't done this since I've owned the bike (about a year), does this sound like the right answer? If so, something I can do myself or must I take it to the shop? Thanks!

unless you live in a very dusty area a year probably wont make that much of a difference in an air filter.
these things were meant to be in there thousands of miles before they need changing.

you can do it yourself but chances are it is something else.
how hot is it in your area. we are getting into the hot part of summer and the hotter it is the worse a motor will perform.

did you do any mods it

no mods, the bike is a completely stock '05. i do live in a hot area (south texas), but i rode the bike last summer in florida (also hot) and am just noticing this problem recently, so i hadn't attributed that as the reason.

i've put about 7,000 miles on the bike since i've owned it, over 9,000 total.
