Exclamation Can someone explain valve adjustment!?

06 600RR, new sprockets - chain, oil change - looking for reasons power is low.

I think I might need a valve adjustment - but the problem is - I have no knowledge on why they would need to be adjusted - could this be affecting the power? Also - I have about 22,000 miles on the bike - what else should I do to make sure the bike is up to specs? I really haven't done anything since about 8,000 miles.

Your valves can need adjusting for several causes - over time the valves & seats can take some wear which will cause the clearances to tighten up and maybe in extreme cases keep a valve open when it should be closed then you get some air leaking past the valve, possible starting problems and so on. Or the valve can stretch, again meaning the clearance needs adjusting.

Some of these are extreme cases, I think that the RR is pretty robust where the valves, valve seats and the like are concerned but if yours has got to 22K without the clearances being checked it needs to be done. Check your handbook or info on here to see what should be checked at that sort of mileage. If it's not been touched since 8000 you should be looking at a minimum of an oil & filter change, maybe coolant and brake fluid replacing too plus whatever the service schedule says.

Don't be surprised if you get told off for 'neglecting' your RR for so long :)

Change the air filter? After market exhaust with no PCIII? Fuel filter clogged/low fuel pressure?

hey PartyPat, why don't you cut back on the partying and spend some quality time with your service manual and the garage....... no service whatsoever between 8,000 - 22,000 ? what are you smoking?

you must be one of those guys who buys a bike to look good , because you have a small B-> and need to find some way to make up for it. but now that its all broken and you have to put money in to your INVESTMENT you have no idea why its now just a big piece of junk with new parts on it

there now that, thats all done with

maybe all joking aside b/c there seems to be a gap in your servicing you may need a major tune up, plugs filters sync the t/b just a thought

Yup. If you have not done anything for 8000 miles you need to start now. Start with changing/cleaning your air filter. Also replace your oil/oil filter. Check the tension on your drive chain. You will feel a huge difference. If you still have problems, do a valve adjustment and check your TPS adjustment.

i had my valves checked at 32k miles and they were all still in spec (from day 1). my dealership said no to checking them at 16k as they had never adjusted any at that time.

i would replace the air filter.

if u need a TPS then the bike will idle rough if at all, smoke like crazy and be almost unusable.

track only 03 for 2010!

I pick mine up from services tomorrow. They adjusted my valves, changed air filter, all fluids/filter, chain tension, etc... I know the mechanic so I know he's being honest w/me. This is at my 16K service

manual says to inspect valves every 16K, i did so on my bike and they were in spec. talked to 3 other people with 600rr's who did the same and all were in spec. however, i do know one person whose were pretty far out of spec and had to be adjusted at 16K. the lesson? check 'em anyway, if only for peace of mind. some of my friends who prefer to take the attitude "aw, my bike's valves are fine, everything runs fine" commented that i must feel like i waisted a lot of time checking my valves. honestly, I don't think so. while in there, i was able to clean out my airbox, clean my throttle bodies, synchronize my starter valves, inspect my sparkplugs and get the peace of mind that my valves were fine to be returned to service for another 16K miles. all this for one full day of cursing and sweating. if i didn't do it, i would be wondering all the time if i was hurting my engine. the peace of mind itself is worth a day's work in my eyes.

I did mine at I think it was 30k and it really started to piss me off because they were all still in spec....I spent all of 4 hours tearing the bike down to the valves and didn't find anything wrong. (one exhaust valve was on the limit so I shimmed that one) Bout time for another one!

mines gone in today as of friday the 27th feb for 16k service,the guy said that yes it is mainly for peace of mind, but if its ok ,then by the next one 32k it will need to be shimmed.plus while its in bits u get new spark plugs and all the other standard service ( full service )

at 16k i found 6 valves to be tight. they were within spec but i decided that i might as well adjust them because everything was already apart and they will only get tighter.
