Exclamation '03 turn signal problem

i have and '03 and my turn signals stopped working. i ran through all the wiring, fuses, and even bought a turn signal switch thinking that was the problem. today before the fuse blew i had white smoke building up underneath the speedo glass, so i shut the bike off. it is ok as long as i don't use the signals. one side used to work, now nothing. is there a relay. i did add flush mounts to the front and left a wire hanging because they don't work as running lights. it did the same thing with the stock signals though. any thoughts on where to go would be helpful.

If you read what you wrote you will know what the problerm is
A wire left hanging touched the frame caused a short & blew
the fuse that is the evil of less evils the most important evil
is the smoke coming from underneath the cluster that will fry
the wiring harness if its not attended asap

If it doesn't challange you it won't change you

the one wire on each side i left hanging are taped up, i will check them again though, just to be sure nothing happened. any suggestions are appreciated. i am sure it is not that simple. i am smart enough not to leave a bare wire hanging out in the middle of nowhere. i am not new to troubleshooting.
