Arrow Headlights went out and Turn Signals KILL Engine!

Hello All

I was on my way out late yesterday afternoon when I pulled up to a stop and put my turn signal on ( either of them ) and it killed the engine. I also realized that both of the headlights and the third center light were not illuminated, and both rear signals were in ' running light ' mode and on all of the time. My bike, 05 CBR600RR, seemed to be running fine and I was able to get home without any problem, but wtf? It was functioning properly on the way to and from work yesterday, so I am kind of at a loss. Any ideas?

Check the fuses maybe?

Make sure the battery terminals have a tight connection

I tore into it last night and checked the battery connections. They were tight. I read something about both headlights going out in a different thread and someone suggested that there could be a loose wire connection somewhere in the ignition switch, so I took that apart and checked it as well. All of the wires seem to have a great connection. Yesterday on the way to work, the headlights and blinkers were working just fine. And then on the way home, no headlights and blinkers kill the engine again. It seems to be an on and off situation. Sometimes it works properly and sometimes it starts acting up.

Get the battery load tested if it passes test your charging system
if it does not pass then your battery is not holding the charge
( bad cells )

i don't think that's the problem Moe. When you push the signal button, and the engine dies, are any fuses blown? Furthermore, are there lights on the dash?

Here's my gut feeling on why it's on and off. Crossed wires with the Engine Stop Relay and a signal wire on the left side of the bike.

OK, so I took the bike into the Honda dealer and had them monkey with it. None of the local bike shops wanted to touch it. Anyway, the Honda mechanic knew exactly what I was talking about when I called him and described the problem. He said that it is not a common problem, but it does happen and its not really bike specific. He sees it on all kinds of Hondas. After about an hour and a half with my bike he called me back and said he was through with it. When I picked it up he showed me that under the seat just off to the left side there was a bad ground and he could see where the wire was melted and black. He cut the bad wire and ran a new ground wire and, just like that, she's back to good. Kind of a weird deal...

Thanks for posting the solution, it was really helpful.

I recently faced the exact same problem. Given the part of the world where i live, its really hard to find any good mechanic/technician here. Really appreciate the solution posted here. There was some voltage leaking into the ground wire. Fixed it up myself, not a penny spent.
