03 radiator fan stays on and drains battery

So yeah this started last night i guess after i was riding for a couple hours. my homie said my bike was makin funny noises. So when i went to start the bike today it wouldnt start. Now heres where it happens. I have that self jump start thingy so when u connect the cables u can turn it on or off thing. yeah watever ok so when i turn it on the fan just starts up when theres no key in the ignition. so im like okaaaaaaaaaaay. i put the key start it up and ride it for like 10 minutes. then when i turn the bike off the fan stays on and within about 30 seconds of watchin the fan stay on i try to start the bike and its died... So if u can help that would be sicc thanx!

first things first make sure the previoius owner did not directly wire the fan to the battery or anything

also more infro about the bike and stuff would be great

i wish i can help u with that i have no idea on that year hell i ride a 05zx10r now just love this forum so im still here

but do a quick search on the relay location try swapping it with another relay see if that helps if not i would start tracing back from the fan into the harness for the cause of the problem

'03-'06 the relay is attached to the ram air tube on the left side. I can't remember which one. I can look it up though. '07 and up... it's under the seat. It sounds like the relay to me too. Probably just stuck in the on position. I don't think they're too expensive to replace.

Yes.. I think it is. I just checked the wiring diagram and there is always power to the fan relay and the ECU controls when it turns on or off. So if the relay is stuck... it looks like even turning off the key will not even stop the fan. If that's what's happening then def... the relay.

All 3 realys are the same. Part # 38380-MN5-003

If you just want to try it... switch out the relay with one of the others. You won't be able to start the bike w/o the other 2 relays but you can hook up the battery and see if the fan stays off.

well idk wat this means but today i wanted to see if the fan would stay on if i charged the battery. so the fan doesnt do it woo hoo but the battery is charging so i let it charge awhile and start it up woo hoo. and it warms up and the fan turns on at about where it suppose to woo hoo but when i take the charger off the battery the bike starts to idle then dies... could that be that same problem?

could be a number of problems. Your battery could be shot. Draining a battery completely dead several times will ruin it.

If your battery is shot then the bike runs off of the charging system. ( you still need a battery in the bike though) At idle speed the charging system doesn't produce a lot of power. I'm just guessing here but with the headlight, and fan running... it may not produce enough power to run everything.

Do you have a volt meter? If so... charge your battery and start the bike. (your battery might be good enough to start the bike) With the seat off... put the volt meter on the bat and chack the voltage. Let the bike warm up enough to turn the fan on and when it comes on... check the voltage again. If it drops less than 12v... I'd say the bat is shot.

if u take out the battery u can go to a local Auto Zone and have them load test the battery to make sure its still good its also free at Auto Zone

if the battery passes after you fully charge it then i would say check the fan relay make sure its good b/c the vibration could of caused to get stuck on
and kill ylour battery

If the bat is good then it would be the charging system. I would check the bat first cause it is easier to check and is more likely to be bad since it has been drained completely.

If your bat has a full 100% charge and the bike dies when the fan kicks on... then your battery is not working correctly.
