pump wont prime

i lowsided my bike about 2 weeks ago and im just now recieving the parts but, i broke the right clip-on ,the brake lever, kill switch, and i put a dent in the tank fairing.

my question is that i tried to restart the bike after i droped it and i dont hear the pump priming? is it cause i broke the kill switch, i have the replacement but i havent put it in yet its been too cold here in tampa, alot of wind chill. i was thinking it was the bas but i used the kill switch and turned it off and back on but nothing and i found out that i shreaded a wire on the kill switch. i rewired it but still nothing. is it possible that the bas is bad? or is it that the kill switch is just broken? i have a full tank of gas and its only 2 weeks old. i've also checked the fuses under the seat and on the left side fairing btw the bike is an 03 with about 8k miles

so i put on all the new stuff and bike still wont start i even reset the bas by using the new kill switch and by pulling the fuse in the fuse box. i even changed around the relays on the left hand side of the bike. the pump still wont prime i even changed out the pgmfi fuse. so im clueless and piss off!!!

Get a new pump... they tend to go in the older models. they are not super expensive just find one on ebay.

gotta start with the basics. Is the bike entirely reassembled? If not, what isn't on yet, and is anything "hanging" and not fastened to original position yet? Do the dash lights come on, etc?

Did you have the BAS off? Is it on with the "chevron" pointing down?

yeah everything is back on the only thing thats not on is the fairings yes i have the bas on the right way with the arrow pointing up, all the lights are on on the cluster besides the fi light

Easiest way is to get a manual... it has the entire wiring diagram as well as a troubleshooting section.

With the wiring diagram... you can bypass the fuel pump relay to see if the fuel pump works and so on.

Dude...I'm thinking the big arrow points down, as I stated above?? Correct me anyone if wrong, but Chevron down!! Flat side up... Turn your BAS around and try it!!

Ok, silly question. You said that the only thing you don't have on, is the fairings; right? If you don't have the nose fairing on ( main harness connector) the BAS is not wired into the circuitry. Your pump will not prime if the main harness connector is not connected.

If you have that connected and the fuel pump will not prime, do a quick check. take a 12v power supply, and two jumper wires and attach them to the pig-tail wires that lead to your pump. If it primes, your pump is OK, the problem lies in the ignition wiring. Oh, and make sure your "Side-stand" switch is in the correct position (kick-stand UP).

If you are getting all other electrical functions when you turn your key on, the next place to look is the "Kill" switch, then the BAS connector.

Let us know what you find out.

The kill switch is plug n play, if you replaced it and the unit is working then it's fine. Depending on the year bike did the ignition get damaged at all? I would guess a low side might have stirred up all the crap in the bottom of your tank and got that in your fuel pump and killed it, however you are going to have to start at the top and make sure everything is working correctly. Bas arrow points up and has to be plugged in or bypassed to start. Run/stop, fuel pump wire comes off the bottom of the ignition, if it was damaged the wire may have come off, fuel pump just died. Depending on how bad the low side, the rest should be fine.

BAS arrow pointing up... kick stand switch will not affect fuel pump.
Check all the connection that you had to fix. Every fuel injector, BAS, Cam pos. sensor, Crank pos. sensor Everything has to be plugged in for the fuel pump to prime.

I don't know off hand which wires to jump to bypass the fuel pump relay but you can do that just to see if the pump is connected and working. If something is not connected properly... you will not get spark and the fuel pump will not prime. I just say that so you won't jump the fuel pump and expect the bike to start... it won't.

BAS bypass is connecting the outside 2 wires of the three wire plug. +1 start with what you had to replace and then look at the places that will cause no pump. T

quagmire- i do have the front cowl just hanging from the front bracket so i dont have to hold the bas, so i guess you can say its on, im going to try to do the jumper harness and see if that works far as the kickstand wasn't even touched, i did shred the ignition wires but there all sodered back together and covered.

i did hit the tank pretty hard so im guessing all the stuff in the bottom killed it or clogged it but i guess ill try the jumper and check the bas again to be 150% sure

The flat part of the BAS is suppose to be on top that may be the problem

I don't think I buy the stirring up dirt and clogging the fuel pump. Each time you fill up the tank it will do the same thing. Or even ride a wheelie and put it down.

Left the bikes in the trailer for 2 weeks. Didn't touch them. BOTH bikes, BOTH 04 600rr's fuel pumps went bad at the same time. FL sun can do some damage. Gas went bad that fast. BUT this was also during the gas hike when rumors were of water in the gas stations etc... Bought an extra one just to be safe if it happens again. T

I could accept the bad fuel. maybe gumming up the filter or something. But did you still hear the pump running when you turned the bike on? BJSTRICK problem is the pump is not priming.

yes i checked the bas again and it is on the right way. im guessing it is the fuel pump. so i may just replace it . it seem like im gettin closer to victory but i really want to ride as the weather is starting to get better

Hold on to your horses... Just because the fuel pump doesn't prime doesn't mean it's the fuel pump. I would jump the fuel pump relay to see if the fuel pump runs. If it does... the problem is something else.

If the ECU doesn't see that everything is correct... it won't let the fuel pump prime and won't let the spark plugs fire. It's easire to find the real problem than to just start replacing stuff.

Do you know how to use a volt meter and even read a wiring diagram? Lets start there.

so after looking over everything again.... bas and all the plugs and fuses i decided to change the relays around again and i heard the pump finally prime and i got the bike to start!!!!!!!! so freaking happy no i can ride this week its going to be 80 all week too sweet, thanks for all the help guys! thats exactly why i love this site

Well, I wouldn't ride yet. If your fuel pump relay was bad and you changed it with the fan relay and now the fuel pump works... that means your fan won't.

Also, I low sided my bike and messed up the wiring going to the relays. It just blew a fuse. Check you wires to the relays and if they're damaged, at least tape them for now and get another wiring harness. If the wires look good, get a new relay and let your bike heat up to 220 to make sure your fan works.

Don't just say, " woohoo, my bike works!" then leave for a long road trip. Otherwise we'll all get to read about your bad experience with a tow truck.

yeah i figured that plus im still waiting on some more parts the left side of the bike is fine nothing was damaged on that side besides that relay. i broke the front brake handle and the kill switch which i replaced them both but now i have no front brake pressure..... more problems

I've learned a lot but I still have a lot to learn. Everything I know is just from mechanical ability and trial and error. Same way you're figuring it all out... one problem at a time.
