stuck tach

i noticed today that when i was on a long mountain ride, my tach gets stuck at 5k rpm for about 10 minutes, then it freed itself up without me restarting the bike. However, later the needle gets stuck again, and stays suck at whatever rpm it was at

After that, the tach works when i turn the bike off and on (the tach sweeps), and when i ride it after a while it gets stuck at any other number of RPM's. this happened about 4x today.

i recently installed frame sliders (bought the bike this week) and it also came with flushmounts and a fender eliminator. 2008 with 1200 miles perfect condition, what could cause this problem?
