Help Changing my ignition on my 07 - all the years the same?

Hey all,

I've had a long and stressful past two months trying to get my bike back on the road. I lost my keys over the winter, and have no idea where the key code is. I've had to tow my bike to several top notch locksmiths, and none of them were able to make a key for it. Its come to the point that now the ignition is very likely to be broken due to all the people trying to get the key made for it. So, I am going to bite the bullet and try to replace the ignition myself. I found one pretty cheap on Ebay, and it looks exactly like my ignition/gas cap, but it does not say what year its for. I know in 07 the chamber is different inside, but can I install an 04, 05, or 06 ignition in my 07 bike? I am really at my wits end on this, every day that passes is just killing me - I want to get back on two wheels, any help is appreciated!

03-04 the same
05-06 the same
07-09 I believe are the same.

Yeah, I know it changed in 07 for INSIDE the ignition, but could I bolt up an 05-06 ignition in place of my 07? will the mounting holes match up, and will the steering wheel lock still work?

The wiring is different, you would have to rewire the whole ignition.
I would say No.. T

According to the parts fiche, they do have different part numbers.

Instead of trial and error, why not just look at getting a replacement lock set (under Handlebar @ Top Bridge). I usually use www.mrcycles.com for my OEM stuff. I've had to replace the lock set before on my '96. It makes it easier as all the locks are once again using 1 key instead of carrying one for the ignition and 1 for the gas tank.

Crap. I've already spent so much money on towing, and Lock smiths - they want $181 for the ignition. Figures I can't just use one from an older year. This whole ordeal is so freaking frustrating, all because I am stupid enough to lose my keys. /sigh

Can't you just go to the dealership with your registration and they will cut you a new key. I know car dealerships will do it. But don't know about motorcycle dealerships.

Nope. I bought my bike brand new from Honda dealer - I called them with my problem, and they said they can't help me. they didn;t write my key code on my paperwork, nor do they have it in their computer. they referred me to a lock smith, but they can't do it either. I called Honda corporate office, and they said they don't keep my key code. Ive tried everything!

On second thought - the last LS was going to charge me $175 just to get the key made, so I guess $200 for a whole new set isn't too bad. I am going to place the order. I know I have to take off the tripple tree, and I have to get a bolt extractor - is there anything else I need? I have a friend that works at a bike shop, I am hoping he can help me with this work as I really don't want to mess this up. My first new bike, and I am tearing it apart already. :(

I'd recommend going to this post https://www.600rr.net/vb/showthread.php?t=105473&page=23 and have Olio pm you the link to the service manual. Should help with the swap.
