No start! But push starts! WEIRD

Hey guys my older brother's bike is having some issues. It's a 2005 CBR 600RR and does not start with the key. It does push/bump start however. I'm pretty sure it's something electrical though. We swapped his ignition/starter relay (the one directly behind the battery) with mine, and still a no go. I tested the output of the relay, its only getting 3v when cranking. I tried connecting a wire from the positive lead of the battery to that output and cranking, (basically attempting to give it 12v) and it sparks like crazy. I'm assuming it's grounding out somewhere. But, is it normal for that relay to put out 3v during cranking? And what does the issue sound like it could be?

I really appreciate any and all help. Thanks!

so it bump starts but will not turn over on its own power. Is the battery good? fully charged? also to see if the relay is good, also check yours when it is installed on your bike. eliminate the possibilities.

Battery sits at a steady 12.6V, and the relay works in my bike...

what does the battery voltage drop to while cranking? What does happen when you attempt to start it?

I didnt consider this. I will find out in the morning ASAP. But to answer the second question, it just cranks and cranks (fuel pump does prime beforehand though).

Def. the next thing to check, You can only expect 3V out of the relay when the Battery drops to 3V. I think you'll find your problem there.

were you able to resolve this? sounds exactly like a problem i am having with my (previously crashed) '08, except mine only exhibits it when hot. starts fine cold, but after running it up to operating temp it will prime and crank away but not start, and bump starting works fine. let it sit for 5-10 minutes and it'll start again.

my thoughts are that it has to be electrical as bump starting works, or maybe a sensor is bad? isn't the starter motor doing the same function as the bump start, just getting the engine to turn over, so why does one work and not the other? it does sound like maybe only enough current is provided to turn the starter *or* run the rest of things so maybe there is a current drain somewhere?

i am 99.9% sure that it is not the starter in my case at least.... since it starts when cold and cranks fine even when it won't start.
