Brake Lever Play..?

Whats the normal brake lever play? When riding home from work this evening I would have to squeeze the lever all the way to my fingers. I hold two fingers on the brake and three around the throttle, and the lever would go all the way to my throttle fingers before I would feel any resistance.

I just changed my pads (EBC HH pads) and fluid in 2008, should I check them both again? How much play should be in the lever, shouldn't it be firm?

I haven't ridden the bike that much at all this year so I wouldn't expect the pads to be worn already.

There is a wheel on the top of the lever that is for adjusting its position, have a play with that to find a setting you like.
