Starting issue...

Iím not a huge idiot and while I'm not a certified mechanic I know what I'm doing... but I canít seem to get my bike to start. Hereís the low down. Bike has been in storage for most of the winter. Havenít started it in about 2- 2 and Ĺ months. Of course the battery is dead so I hook it up to the charger and try to start it. When I turn the ignition on my oil light comes on and stays on. Checked the oil and it was fine and I even went ahead and changed it for sh*ts and giggles anyway. So I definitely have oil and the right amount. When I turn the kill switch to the on position it makes a loud clicking sound and the oil light blinks. If I try to start it I donít get any fire and just a cranking sound from what seems to come from under the seat. If I leave the ignition on for a few seconds and the kill switch on the gauges reset, speedometer bounces off the top and everything resets. Also noticed my speedometer reads 7mph while itís sitting there. My guess is itís something electric or the starter perhaps??? It was running fine before the winter and it hasnít moved or been started at all which leads me to believe itís not mechanical. Any help or push in the right direction would be much appreciated. I know thereís a lot of wonít start threads and I looked through a bunch but didnít see any that fit this description. Just want it to be running in time for spring!!

I would take your battery and have it checked, putting it on a charger isn't going to charge a dead battery. I would start there. If nothing has been touched on the bike then it's something simple. Start easy and go from there. This is probably why the cluster is acting weird. T

i recall something about random speeds showing up on the speedo, and might also account for the flashing oil light...


iirc, it had to do with a bad ground connection.

going to try and find the thread, but eh we shall see

oh, and the oil like SHOULD be on until the engine is running, as its a pressure based switch, not level based .. no pressure == reason to light the lamp.

Same thing happened on my Daytona 675 last year after I didn't ride it for 2 months. Bought a new battery and it fired right up.

If its still giving you problems after you started with the battery, I would check your ground connections liketenjin said, that can sometimes cause your gauge cluster to act up and would certainly keep your bike from turning over.

not so much turning over, and the starter motor has a clean ground (direct to the engine, which is attached to the ground on battery) BUT, it could cause it to not fire, perhaps not allow the starter relay to trip if its not getting ground.

Clutch switch or side stand switch have sometimes caused problems like this. Haven't experienced personally but I have heard that they have caused problems like yours

Get the battery load tested first, then look at other stuff later....
