Bike shuts off when I rev it

So I just picked up a 2006 with 4400 miles. It's completely stock. The guy I bought it from originally said it needed a new battery but then said he charged it and it was fine. I've had it for about a week and it ran great. No troubles what so ever. Well I just went out and started it tonight and was letting it idle. It was idling fine and after it warmed up, I revved it a little. Just to like 5000 rpms. When it came back down to idle, it shut off. The headlight gets brighter when i rev it which would lead me to believe that it's a battery issue but it started up fine. After it shut off, I cranked it again but had to give it a little gas to get it started again. Then it idled just fine again until I revved it and then it shut off again. :confused: any thoughts?

It was at about 115. I let it warm up for 5 min or so.

Maybe the rectifier? It's on the left side of the engine toward the front of the bike. I know the 03-04's had a big rectifier problem but I thought they had fixed it for the 05-06.

Have you used a multimeter to check the battery/charging system?

My gf's dad is bringing his over on Thursday to check it out.

What should I check the rectifier for? Any thing that would tell me it's bad?

I dont know why you had to give it any gas to get it started again because its obviously fuel injected... when it dies, is it quick or kind of like its a bleeding out death(loses little power then bites the dust)

It's more of a bleeding out. Like it tries to stay running but doesn't have the power to do it. Almost like it gets flooded.

Yeah doesn't sounds like a rectifier problem then. Maybe when NICO gets on he can help you out...He's pretty good troubleshooting. I'm sure you haven't checked what your spark plugs look like yet?

That was my suggestion other than testing the battery... I would talk to Nico as well. he has helped me before and knows just about everything there is to know. Don't rev your bike though because 1 it doesn't need to be reved and 2 its not good for it.

Just went back out and it wouldn't start right away. I had to give it some gas to get it to start and even then, it took a couple tries to get it to stay on. However, once it started, it was fine. Revved it and it stayed on just like normal.

I haven't checked the plugs yet. I was planning on doing a oil change/basic tune up soon just so I knew it was up to date.

Buggers are dobbing me in...

As per my PM mate, I would be looking at either the IACV or MAP sensors.

If you IACV is a little sticky it wont keep up when the rpm comes back down, and a vacuum problem (like a pinched hose) will cause the IACV to be set to the wrong position.

You may also just have stale fuel, how long since you filled her up?

I put a fresh tank in a week ago when I got the bike. 91 octane too (thats the highest we can get in Colorado).

Also, I'm not getting an CEL's. One thing that just hit me after reading Nico's "Everything you need to know to maintain your bike" thread is my buddy came over on Sat to check out the bike. He played with what I'm guessing is the idle speed control knob. It's down on the left side and almost looks like a choke? He kind of pulled on it. I dont know if he twisted it at all. This was the first time I started the bike up since then.

You can always try to adjust it and sees if it helps.

That wouldn't matter because you said your bike completely shuts off... that would be more of a stall if your rpms got too low and even if so you would still have lights and what not.

Hardly. There are other people here who know just as much if not more...

He may have stuffed up your idle, have a play with it and then look at the vacuum line going to the MAP sensor...

I played with that a little bit and it seemed to work fine. :shrugs: Rode it for 30 min and everything worked like a champ.
