2004 cooling issues need of help before i spend anymore money

The bike is ranging in temps up to 175 to about 230 after a few minutes of riding. the bike at low speeds the temp will climb to about 200's at about 25 mph. when i turn the bike off the fluid is boiling out of the reserve tank and coming out the overflow lines on the shifter side of the bike. Is this a thermostat issue or what should i be searching for to solve my problem?

assuming your are talking farenheight, 230 is not all that hot

but you say its boiling out?

when was the last time your radiator was flushed / fluid replaced?

might also be a weak radiator cap.

p.s. 230 isnt over heating yet.

Im curiois what fluid is in the bike. My bikes been near that temp and never boiled over and out the overflow.

the radiator cap keeps pressure in the cooling system up, higher pressure means higher boil point of any liquid in the system.

take your cap off and try to let the bike to get to 220, keep your face arms, and body clear of the cap opening tho. ;)

Sounds like your radiator cap is either not seating properly or is not operating correctly internally. Get a new one.

Hmmm I had a similar thing that happen to me about 2 months ago. It started boiling and blew a hole in my reservoir and leaked out all over the street. Have a few days of inspection I found that I had a damage hose. I have no clue what that had to do with the issue. But I replaced it and Wield my reservoir hole up. And flushed the entire system. Have not had a issue since. Well on the street that is. I still found that it was leaking outta the overflow lines at the track. I assume I just over filled it or something.

But check for lines and and flush the system. That cured my problem. Oh and make sure the top is on all the way. LOL I learned the hard way!

hey thanks for all the comments. i just flushed the system about 2 weeks ago. i had a small leek in the radiator is self so i had that welded. i am running water wetter in the bike right now. so is the consensus im hearing is its a radiator cap issue not a thermostat problem?

haha yea i got that fixed a few weeks ago now its the bike decided it wanted to give me a little more trouble. so it sounds like your telling me the cap is just letting air into the system then super heating the cooling process.

its either air in the system, and it wasnt burped

to do this, cap off, system full, bring bike to about 180 - 190 degrees, give it a couple quick sharp revs, this will allow the air to come to the radiator, thus expell it from the bike, turn bike off, let system cool and top off


and or, its a weak radiator cap which isnt allowing enough pressure in the system to build up, thus allowing it to boil over )the air causes the same situation)

take steps to remedy both of those and i suspect you are good to go, unless the person that "welded" the raditor (im guessing you mean brazed, and radiators useally are not welded) did a crap tastic job and messed up the radiator further.

i really appreciate the tips. Im going to go try this and see if it fixes the bike. i just ordered a new cap as well. i do have one more question when i originally burped the system the fluid was flowing out of the radiator neck (were you screw the cap on) is that sufficient enough to let the bike cool fill the radiator and reserve back up. will i be theoretically good to go then?

That should be fine.

BTW, nobody seems to mention it, but the flushing/filling/burping should be done with the bike on its sidestand (as opposed to using a rear wheel stand) so that the filler neck is at the high point of the system.

i let the bike get to 214 and it started pouring a steady stream of coolant out of the top of the radiator. im currently waiting for it to cool down to top off the fluid in the reserve and the radiator it self. would you consider that bleed?

dont let it boil over, that means its generating air inside the system

as i said 180 - 190, rap the throttle a couple times, turn it off.

Way to hot... you need it at no more than 195. If it starts to get above that turn the bike off and let it cool down.

As for your problem, it may have been caused by improperly burping the system, over filling the reservoir or a dying rad cap.
