Misfortune

I just did my 1st self oil/filter change today. Result: There's a leak at the seal point of the filter. I just looked at the old filter and the ring is missing so hopefully that's all it is. However, how much oil am I going to lose by taking the filter off with a full tank? The other issue I'm having is the nut broke off the new K&N filter and I can't loosen it. I knew that hand tightening would've been sufficient but when it popped off I thought it was because it wasn't properly secured. Now I'm paying for it and it's agonizing. Any advice?

To get the oil filter off, take some large channel locks and and twist it off, try not to puncture the oil filter unless you buy another one in which case it doesn't matter. let the oil drain out of that area and I'd recommend hand tightening your filter on (even though there is a torque value) for the second time around. Check in the oil sight glass and see if the oil level dropped enough for it to be refilled. If you have two gaskets pull the old one off and stick the filter with it's own original gasket on. the amount of oil shouldn't be much over half a liter that comes out if the bike is cold. just get something to let it dump out in obviously, and top up if needed.
