could be does the noise go away as you rev it? what you can do is take a long screw dryer put it to the side of the block (chain side) near the timing chain tensioner and listen for the noise put your ear on the end of the screwdriver thats if you dont have a stethoscope ....also put it on the top of the valve cover and listen

I know it's definitely on the chain side cause I thought I heard when riding so I leaned down on both sides and its definitely the chain side ..but it sounds like its kind of high ip on the bike... am I in any danger of hurting the bike because I still have to go to my class tom and then go home (100m)

So this tapping sound seems to be happening when the bike is over 200 degrees and goes away slightly when the clutch is pulled all the way in.. but when below 180 no tapping

What oil are you using?? Too thin a viscosity could make this happen, especially at higher temps.

So I pulled my fairings off and the tapping seems to be coming more from the exhaust .. I have had a couple people who work on vehicles listen to it and all say sounds like the motor is fine and its just a rattle somewhere.. any suggestions

If it's an 07+ bike, have a look at the exhaust valve... might be a bit loose and knocking around in there.

Well just have a look at the outside of the pipe for anything that may be hitting it, and failing that pull it off and try to see what you can get out of it... someone may have thrown a nut or something down there...

Yea.. there seems to only be one spot to separate the pipe and that's behind the heat shield everywhere else is welded together.. is this normal on an 06 or is it a hack job.. I just want the sound gone for peace of mind.. don't want a new exhaust
