03 rr - Engine noise along with throttle and heat issues.

I have an 03 600rr with 28,000 miles on it.
On cold start up I have some knocking noise similar to this other members video that I have linked below. It's not as loud and doesn't get louder with revving. Also when it reaches temperatures above 200*F (which happens quite frequently) the throttle response is somewhat delayed. And (with the engine not running) if I try to crank the engine when it's above 200*F it will not fire unless I open the throttle while cranking.

If the bike has been sitting a few days and I start it, the idle will race to 2000rpm and I will have some minor smoke (appears clear-ish/white) along with some small *putt-putt* noises in the idle every so often. Once it gets up to temp it settles but still while stop and go riding the idle seems to change by 500rpm or so on it's own.

To add to the list of symptoms, fellow riders say that there is a decent smell and a small puff of smoke from my exhaust when I open the throttle to wide open.

I was leaning towards valve seals for the reason of the racing idle and smoke after it's been sitting but I'm not sure if that's where to go. I have thought of trying to find another motor but I just don't have the money right now with planning my wedding and everything else I got going on.

Any thoughts?

Got the same year with the same mileage maybe more.
I've never heard a sound like that. This knocking sound like something spinning around.
It is time to rip off that cover and see whats spinning around in there.

Right on cold start up you'd see a momentary puff of bluish tinted smoke exiting the muffler if the valve seals were going bad. Valve seals wearing out would only let a small amount of oil to get past the valve guides and valve, allowing a little oil puddle to sit on the piston top or on the backside of the valve.
Try checking Oil/Coolant levels and colors. Your motor might be consuming them. The symptoms your experiencing throw my brain for a whirl.
That noise in the video footage sounds like a clutch component has fryed.

When was the last time you changed your oil and what is the level at now? As previously suggested, I would check the coolant as well. To me, that sounds like a rod knocking in the video. A simple/quick way to confirm what cylinder or rule out the idea is to take each spark plug wire off 1 at a time and see if the noise settles down at all.

There is a loose chain in your motor. I forget the name of the chain but it needs to be tensioned again. I spoke to someone a few weeks ago who flips RR's for a living. When I turned my 03 on he heard it making a very subtle knocking noise, tiny little clicking to be exact. He had an open RR motor and showed me the chain and explained what the issue was. I wish I had made a note of that it was called so I could be more helpful

You are referring to the cam chain and its tensioner. To fix that you would need a new tensioner since the stock 600rr is not a manual one, so you can't just retension it. The cct noise is normally much more consistent and a more of a slapping/clicking noise then what I heard in the video. I'll see if I can find a proper video

YESS!!! That is what I was trying to get at. My noise is the CCT noise, it doesn't sound anything like this. I figured OP's might be in much worse shape than mine but I guess I was on the wrong path with my diagnosis. Thanx for the input man and good luck finding a solution OP

I thought about the CCT as well. I did just replace it last year. The oil level is good but I haven't changed it yet this year. I'll do it today. I'm going to filter the oil through a strainer in hunt for flakes. I will also check the coolant level.

I will get a video up of MY bike later today so you guys can see what I mean.

Thank you all for the replies to help me narrow this down.

So I changed the oil today. Some small flakes but nothing to get crazy about.
The sound is more of a tick than a knock. The video shows the smoke well. Color is all white. Coolant level is good. The video is taken right after I changed the oil.

That's hard to say man. The smoke doesn't look blue like oil smoke. What does the smoke smell like? Does it still smoke when the bike is warm?

The ticking sounds kinda like a cam chain rattle, but it's hard to say from a camera mic recording the noise.

Hopefully Nico chimes in here for you. He really knows his stuff.

If the coolant levels are good, I'd say that seems like its condensation. Does that smoke go away after the motor reaches about 170f just idling? That sound is less alarming than the previous video.

I had assumed the original video was your bike, so disregard what I said before. How cold outside was it when you were doing this and what did the other riders say the smell was like? If the coolant level has not changed, then I am surprised to see only white exhaust smoke unless, as mentioned by prevee, it was condensation from it being cold out. From the video I did not hear any noises that seemed out of the ordinary. Did any specific event bring about these problems or bring your attention to it?

Got down to the throttle bodies today. As soon as i took the top cover of the airbox off there was a smell of fuel. Here are pics of what looks to be pooling fuel on top of the valves.

I had notice buildup on the valves last year when i did the velocity stacks. I didn't pay too much attention and assumed it was oil. I noticed the fuel smell at that time too.

I'm not sure if its worth mentioning, but I have done the PAIR valve delete, short velocity stacks, k&n air filter, a micron slip on, and no power commander.

The smoke didn't really have a oil/coolant/fuel smell to it.
It could just be condensation. The garage its kept in is well insulated and it's often damp inside.
The smoke is usually only there when i first pull it out of the garage. It doesn't smoke like in the video when it's warm. But people riding behind me still say when i get on it there is a small puff of smoke and a smell.

Maybe ill switch bikes with someone on Friday and ride behind it and see what they see.

With those mods you definitely want a power commander to straighten out you're AFR. If you're running rich you will be puffing some smoke and you will smell fumes from the exhaust.

What you want is a dyno tune.

I hope that's all I need.

I can't afford a power commander right now so it will have to wait.

I didn't think I would be dumping so much fuel that I would have pooling on the valves after shutting the engine down.

maybe the mods you have are telling the O2 sensor something on adjusting fueling....

I wouldn't think so either.

And I'd think with you're mods it would actually lean the bike out and not richin it.

When was the last time you cleaned you're air filter???? It may be getting gunked up causing the engine to run rich.

Correct. No o2 sensor.

Well I have bigger problems now...

Last Friday at the track, #2 spark plug pushed out of its threads. After using hand tools to rip my bike apart and thread the spark plug back in I was able to make it home that night.
But after trying to torque the plug back down there are no more threads left for the #2 plug. So now I am forced to pull the head so I can helicoil.
I guess I might as well do the valve seals while it's off.

I wanted to do the seals anyway. I just wish it could have waited until the end of the season.
