HID head lights stopped working

Need help guys, both my high and low beam HID lights stopped working. the third eye light or whatever its called does work however and it does have an HID bulb.

the low beam started to cut in and out on a regular basis. would work for an hour then turn off. or work for a couple days then be off for a day. i checked to see if everything was plugged in like it should be and everything appeared fine. then it stopped working completely. had a track day coming up in a week so i ignored it since the fairings would be coming off for that anyways so i could take a closer look.

a day later the high beam stopped working completely as well. the light on the dash doesn't even show when the switch is in the one position. the low beam would do one little flash when the bike started but that's it, and i get nothing from the high beam at all.

i swap the fairings and don't notice anything out of the usual and figure it will all work once i plug it all back in when the OEM fairings go back on. putting the street fairings on today and i get nothing from the lights.

what could it be? everything is connected correctly from what i can tell. fuses are good. bike starts so power should be good. wires look in great condition. bulbs look fine although i am not an HID expert at all, easy way to test the bulbs??? the ballasts both say DDM on them so i am assuming that is the brand but i bought the bike with these lights already on it. what should i try or do? is the ballast gone? would it be cheaper to go back to stock?

please help!!! thanks in advance.

My guess is the ballast died on you. My DDM HIDs ballasts both died at the same time as well. Have you took a multimeter to them and see if they have any voltage coming from them to the lights? It's always going to be cheaper to go back to regular halogen bulbs but if you want to replace it I would invest in a good HID set. Here's a review thread I did on the DDM kit vs the Volt kit. Several months later and my lights still start up and work better than my DDM kit ever did.

I did not check to see if power was coming from the ballast. Would power still come through the ballast if it was toast?

Take a look at this, could be the issue of not the ballast

thanks, but if that wire is connected then the problem is most likely the ballast?

what is necessary to put the head lights back to stock? am i going to be able to just buy all the parts from the dealership? (no time to order online and wait for shipping)

No need to buy anything. You just unplug the HIDs from your stock h7 plug and remove. HIDs are plug and play so nothing should have been altered during install.

ok, well i went down to the dealership and picked up a bulb but they didn't have the socket for the bulb so it will be ordered and in tomorrow. just figured i would try one side first.

Any suggestions on getting the ballast off? it looks like its secured with double sided 3m tape to the frame. gave it a little tug and its on their really good.

You shouldn't need a socket. The HIDs are plugged into the OEM socket.

What year bike do you have? Depending on the year you might need a new dust cap. Follow the link on the How to thread for whatever year bike you have to see how they mount and just reverse it.

I have an 08 so I'm not familiar with how the wires are tucked. Hopefully someone else can chime in on that. The screw insert might be stripped. Is there any way to push on the screw from behind while you turn it? Again, I have an 08 so I'm not sure how that screw is mounted.

Easiest thing on the wiring might be to check a site like kneedraggers.com or ronayers.com to look and see if they show how the harness goes. I know it tucks down by in the nose, and the grey and blue big plugs run over the air duct on the left side. The third eye goes to the left side of the bike and tucks behind the tip sensor. The gauge plug can only go one way, so that's that.

As for the stripped screw, just about anything you can do for a stripped screw. Maybe a knife blade (then flathead) gently prying upwards on the screw while spinning out?

Yea I check websites like that and they didn't help too much. Just shows the harness by itself.

Switched to OEM lights and it works so it must have been the ballast. Looks weird now with the HID their eye and normal headlight but whatever. Thanks for all the help.

Ok, not HID but its got the same blue color the HID headlights had.

New issue is my headlight didn't turn on right away.... bike warmed up and the light still wasn't on. Turned bike off and back on and nothing. Then randomly it came on. Amy thoughts?

Check all your wiring for any loose connections.

I checked when I was first having the issue with the HIDs and didn't find anything. I'll double check though.

If the wiring connections are solid then your Ballast might be on the way out not igniting the gas like they should be doing or not enough gas being pumped into the system

Moe, he went back to OEM after having a faulty ballast.

warsaw, does it happen to both the high and low beam or just low beam?

I actually don't have the brights hooked up. Ballast died on both and decided to try the low beams first.
