RPM guage is not working???

hey guys i bought a new gauge for my 2005 cbr600rr, the guage looks to be in good condition, everything is working except the rpm. when i turn on the bike the RPM gauge goes all the way up and down. but when i start the bike the guage does not read RPM(stay on zero), is there somthing i am missing (pluge, wire ....) or do you think the guages are not good

Push on the plug in the back of the cluster, it might not be all the way in.

Just fyi, the RPM gauge is called a tachometer or "tach" for short.

I'm just curious, why did you get a new gauge cluster? Did the original one get damaged? Offhand it sounds like the tachometer is getting power since tach needle moves the full range when ignition is turned on but possibly that it is not getting a signal from the ECM or the gauge cluster is bad. The '03 service manual says to check tachometer input peak voltage between the yellow/green wire (+) and the green wire (-). With the engine running it should be 10.5V minimum. It says that if the peak voltage is normal then the guage cluster is bad. If the peak voltage is less than 10.5V then the ECM should be replaced. If the reading is 0V then you have bad continuity and need to check the wiring harness. If the wiring harness is good then the gauge cluster circuit board may be bad.

Hope that helps.

sorry to bring back an old thread but i have the same problem did you ever figure it out? i have tested the wire and it seems to be reading correctly.. it just seems odd that everything else in the cluster would work except the tach.. and that the tach sweeps when the bike is started..

I too have the same issue with an 03, the tach sweeps when the bike is started but then sits on 0. I tried a different speedo and it does the same things so it's definetly not the speedometer, it must be something else.

Check the two plugs on the left hand side under the ram air cover, then ecu plugs and then check the continuity of the wire from the ecu to the gauges.

If your bike is running the problem can only be one of three things:

1. Gauges are dead
2. Wire between ecu and gauges is open or short to ground
3. ECU is dead
