Talking Dies when put in gear, runs well in neutral

OK - I crashed. Working on track maneuvers on the street. Not the smartest thing I've ever done (not the dumbest either but that's a different story).

I thought the damage was all cosmetic. Checked everything - wheels true, forks straight, brakes good, runs well. So I bought new fairings and thought I was good to go.

Just finished putting on the fairings - my bike is now prettier than yours ... when she's in neutral. Put her in gear and she dies. (Yes, the kickstand is up.) The kickstand sensor wire is connected on both ends. The mechanism for the sensor on the kickstand looks good on a cursory review, but there was a rock lodged up in it.

Any thoughts? Is there an easy way to check if it is the kickstand sensor? Any ideas as to what else might be the problem (other than the rider)? This is my 2009 CBR600RR.

This is what comes to mind for me too. Have you anybody with a RR you could do a quick swap and see.

My money is more on the clutch switch as Mike suggested.

Maybe shine a light on the switch along with the wires that extend from the clutch perch and look for any damage.

How on earth would a clutch switch cause stalling?

Bypass the kickstand switch. All you need to do is jumper the wires together.

If the bike is cutting when he shifts into gear, the clutch lever switch could be faulty. It means the signal generated when the clutch is pulled in isn't originating/reaching its destination.

wouldn't cause a stall.

go put your bike on a stand, kickstand up, and start it

now pull your clutch and put it in gear... no stall
now don't pull your clutch and put it in gear... no stall

it has no effect on whether the bike will stay running or not. the only time the state of the clutch switch REALLY matters is if the kickstand switch is not satisfied, in which case the clutch switch will have to be satisfied in order to start the bike in gear.

honda also uses the clutch switch position to increase idle speed to assist in getting off the line when in gear. but that has nothing to do with this.

I rode my 03 after forgetting to plug the clutch switch (the one under the lever) and the bike would run just fine...

You're right, my bad. I was thinking about it backwards since he said the kickstand switch looked good but I didn't read he really didn't test it, just thinking about something else that can shut the bike off when putting it in gear if it was in fact good.

To test the kickstand switch put the bike on a stand, pull the connector apart where it enters the wiring harness and insert a test meter checking for continuity between the two pins. It should test open with the stand down and have connection with the stand up. My guess is it'll read open in both positions.

Pull it apart, if memory serves me there is not much to, it mostly a plastic cover and some contacts, or as stated before, bypass it even temporarily to see if it helps.

Thanks for the clarification. Thought a faulty clutch switch alone could cause this.

A buddy just went down recently and had the same issue. Bike died as soon as he selected a gear. We bypassed the kickstand switch close to the stand itself and it still behaved the same. What turned out to be the case though is that the frame slider actually pinched and cut through a portion of his kickstand switch wires so we jumped it at the cut and all was well. So follow those wires from the switch to the connector further up and make sure they're not torn anywhere else. Knowing that could have saved us half an hour in wondering on the side of the road...
