Friends Kawi problem

One of my riding buddies has an '04 zx 636, he maintains it very well and does regular oil changes, recently he used Motul Synthetic 10 40 and after about 800 km he was having a hard time shifting from 2-3 and back, the dealer told him his shift forks were bent and it would be almost 2k to fix it, a local racer told him that it could be the oil so he changed it and soo far has not had the problem, He posted on a kawi forum with no good answers so I am wondering if anyone has heard of or experienced this at all? and may have some ideas.

i run synthetic all the time... you need to make sure you get all the syn out if you go back to regular oil or vice versa... they don't mix well, and that could be part of the problem if he left some in the tranny case when he changed it.
