anyone have this issue and fixed it? The part is $24 plus shipping but I'm wondering if i can just patch it up with some epoxy or something once i find the hole.

Two ways of looking at this:

1. $24 and it's done and good

2. Spend $10 for a good, quick cure epoxy. Find the hole, epoxy it, hope that it cures right, hope that's the only hole, put it all back together and hope that a major piece of the one system that keeps your engine from overheating and seizing is fixed once and for all. The stock expansion tank is a piece in the pressurized cooling system that if it fails can make you loose coolant that can overheat the engine over time or dump coolant onto your rear tire causing you to loose traction.

Understand what I outlined in #2 is the worst case scenario but you have to decide what's worth it to you; I know my choice.

Two part epoxy doesn't like to stick to the plastic that the coolant tanks are made of all to well. I did my coolant expansion tank in my MINI in that manner as a short term solution until I got the replacement in the mail. Epoxy held the crack for exactly 2 days until it crapped out exposing the original crack. If the replacement is 24 bucks, I wouldn't even think about epoxy.
