2007 Throws Code 18, Won't Start
Hey guys, I've run into a bit of a brick wall currently with the bike so I'm looking for some help.
In the 3 1/2 years I've owned my bike it's never given me a day of trouble, until this year. There was a small situation a few days after I took it out of storage where it stalled shortly after I started it after it sat in the sun for a few hours, and it took a second to fire back up, but then that didn't happen again that day.
A couple weeks later I go to leave work, the bike had one again been in the sun for a few hours, and it refused to start. It spit and sputtered and would occasionally fire but then die right away. I had to roll it into the shade for a bit and give it a ton of convincing (multiple attempts while giving it some throttle) and EVENTUALLY I got it to start and run smooth. Rode it home, put it away.
Took it out once or twice after that, no troubles, until one day it sits in the sun again for a few hours, and it took an hour and a half to finally get the thing to start and idle. That day I ride it home, and it threatens to stall every time I take off after sitting at a stop sign for even just 5 seconds. I get it home and it refuses to start again.
After some talking of the 600RR.net Facebook page, I think I've got it down to a battery (tested it as hot bike/hot battery = no start; cold bike/hot battery = no start; cold bike/cold battery = fires right up and runs smooth) So i buy a brand new battery. I put the battery in, and it fires right up. It sputters a bit but smooths out, I figure maybe there's some residual fuel in the cylinders from the running issues previously, but I think I've got it licked.
I go to ride a few days later, complete refusal to start, I notice it's now blinking a code, 1 long, 8 short, code 18 Cam Pulse Sensor. I pull the fairing, disconnect the sensor, hook up a multimeter and turn the bike over, I get .2-.4 volts when it should be between .7-1.5v at least. So I order a sensor. Today I installed the new sensor, no change at all.
The fuel pump is priming, so no issues there, I tried clearing the code by jumping the DLC, still no start. I'm totally out of ideas and totally stressed out. This came completely out of nowhere and I have no idea what the issue could be at this point. I do have a PC3 hooked up, but that powers on just as it should judging by the lights, and that wouldn't cause a code 18. Somebody help!!!
