Clutch replacement (what did I do wrong?)

Hi All
I just replaced the clutch discs on my 03 600rr. Everything seemed to go back together correctly. When I intalled the cover and took a look a the clutch release lever coming out of the clutch cover, the distance is real close to the cable, I tryed to take the cover off and reposition the lever, but it seems to attach only one way. What would cause this? I did notice the return spring is broken, but I did not think its job was to positon the level?

Do you have a service manual? Sounds like the release lever in the clutch cover is not engaging the clutch lifter. If you look at the release lever you will see kind of a flat spot in the rod of the lever with a slot that needs to grab the lifter that sits in the middle of the clutch center. The lifter may have slid back a bit as it sits behind the ball bearing in the clutch center and is not sticking out far enough to grab the lever. Hope that helps!
